Social News is an application focused on brining your RSS feeds to your iPhone and making it easy to keep track of those stories you want to read. It comes with a few feeds built in, but users can add the feed of any website they want. User can also choose stories from these feeds to add to their queue to be viewed later. The queue is basically a folder for marking stories you don’t have the time to read currently, but want to later. Items are added to the queue by simply tapping on them while in the list view, as seen in the screenshot below.

As mentioned before, one tap will add an item to the queue. That said, a simple double tap will avoid the queue and open the story right away in the built in web browser view, as seen below. The site that loads is simply the actual post on the website in a built-in browser.  It has all the basic functions, such as refresh and going back. Also, an information button in the top right allows the user to see the full URL and post title, as well as from where it was loaded.

Being able to add feeds is an obvious must. However, feeds can also be later deleted and reordered so that access to your favorite websites is easier than those that you may not read as much. There is also an option to dim old posts so you can more easily stay up to date with the most fresh news. When it comes to getting the posts from your favorite site, this application does a great job of it.

Social News Edit

All in all, Social News was put together very well.  It works in portrait mode as well as landscape, which can be useful. Although the interface can be somewhat confusing when you first open the application, it does get better as you go along. Furthermore, there is a tutorial that is played using alert messages when the app is opened for the first time to ease this process. If you want to see it again, you can do so via the settings menu.

Once you have it all set up, Social News could basically be your only mobile RSS reader.
