Appletell Exclusive: 10.5.3 Very Soon?
This is by no means a guaranteed outcome, but an Apple representative I spoke with seemed very confident that we will see an update from Apple very soon.
I had called Apple about my MacBook Pro. About every 4 times I put it to sleep, it would wake up, but the screen would not come on, and then it would require a force shutdown. Upon reboot, It would tell me that Mac OS X has shutdown unexpectedly. I assume it had a kernel panic, though I couldn’t verify because the screen wasn’t on. I was also having a problem with using my MacBook Pro in closed lid mode with my external display. As I thought, the Apple rep confirmed that these problems were related. There was apparently a specific run of MacBook Pros with this issue.
Where it got interesting is when he told me that I had two options: either I could do an Archive and Install, or I could wait for the next update. “Oh, great,” I thought, “Either move back to a buggier OS version, or just wait for who-knows-how-long.” Then the Apple rep said, “the update should be coming out very soon.” I asked what that meant, a few months? A few weeks? A few days? His response: “I’m surprised it’s not out yet.”
His advice was to check software update every couple of days.
Here’s what I think is safe to assume, assuming he has the correct information: An update is coming out within the next week or two for Leopard. It is most likely Mac OS X 10.5.3, given that the other solution was to move back to 10.5.0, implying that the problem stems from 10.5.2. Thus, 10.5.3 would logically be the problem solver. And lastly, it fixes this (rather large) MacBook Pro problem, as well as logically bundling other bug fixes.

Well, tomorrow’s a Tuesday… :p
on March 10, 2008 at 06:23 PM - LINKThat’s a good point. It seems that if the rep is correct, the update could come as soon as tomorrow.
on March 10, 2008 at 07:12 PM - LINKNote that the Graphics Update 1.0 may also have induced this behavior, so its possible we’re just looking at another graphics update. Hopefully 10.5.3 though!
on March 10, 2008 at 07:14 PM - LINKProbably not anytime soon. Nothing has been seeded to developers yet. I just checked ADC and the latest seed is still 10.5.2.
on March 10, 2008 at 07:17 PM - LINKI have noticed the same behaviour with my MacBook since 10.5.2. The thing won’t wake from sleep and displays a blank. Rebooting has been my only option.
on March 10, 2008 at 09:20 PM - LINKWell, with luck, hope is on the horizon for us!
on March 10, 2008 at 09:21 PM - LINKI noticed an issue with my MacBook after putting it to sleep as well. The machine is on but there is a blank screen on wake up. I have an external monitor so what happens is that the main display jumps to the external. If you have an external like I do, the main display may be there. I simply go to System Preferences >> Displays >> Detect Displays and the desktop jumps back to the laptop.
on March 10, 2008 at 10:24 PM - LINKI too am having problems with my Macbook Pro , both under Tiger, and now Leopard. The screen occasional goes black , requiring a forced shut down, and on about 4 occasions, the machine screen has both gone black, and the machine has become super over heated! I have been told this also may be related to “faulty ram”?
on March 11, 2008 at 12:39 AM - LINKHas anyone else experienced these combined problems?
Ray, what you are describing is closed lid mode which does not work for me.
on March 11, 2008 at 05:31 AM - LINKMore than likely this will be a firmware update for affected machines, not a 10.5.3 system software release.
I’d suges that this is the software that you insider was talking about, and firmware updates are not seeded to ADC members as they have zero affect on cocoa/carbon frameworks…
on March 11, 2008 at 06:25 AM - LINKThis has been a problem with my 17” PowerBook 1.67 GHz since updating to Leopard. I get a kernel panic when I open the lid after being connected to a second monitor. It goes into sleep mode fine (the pulsating light) after disconnecting, but goes into a kernel panic every time I open the lid.
on March 11, 2008 at 10:29 AM - LINKpretty sure he just didnt want to deal with your whiny ass
on March 13, 2008 at 08:38 PM - LINKI’ve had interesting black screens too. its randomly gone black and I need to tap some keys for a minute or so then I hear the CD drive move the “grabber” and it comes back…but it does heat up as John said
on March 13, 2008 at 09:19 PM - LINKYeah i was wondering though when is all that exactly coming out because i am tired of waiting every day for some new software update, and it never comes!!!
on March 21, 2008 at 01:15 PM - LINKI have a macbook pro, same problems.
For the closed lid issue, here is what I figured out with the apple store. Something is keepingit from recognizing the screen if I am using a dvi-vga adapter. To work around the issue, here is what i do.
Before connecting the monitor shut down your laptop totally. After it is shut down, connect the monitor. Once connected press the power button and as soon as u hear the cd drive make its noise and before the chime noise close the lid, it should recognize the monitor at this point. And boot up with the monitor as your main display. Once it is booted, you can open the laptop lid and detect monitors if you need both displays.
It is important to have the the lid closed before the system does the boot up chime and starts booting. This is the only way i could get this working. And I recognized it after hours of wanting to through it through the window.
I hope the next update fixes it.
on March 27, 2008 at 04:08 PM - LINKRemoving iStat Pro has worked for me on this issue.

I hope they fix the issues with Bridge CS3, Illustrator CS3 and Dreamweaver CS3. After updating to 10.5.2 the programs listed previously stopped and all I get is that “Adobe Illustrator does not support this architecture”. So I use my other MacBook since it still has Tiger…
