Apple TV refresh also a possibility

by Jake Gaecke on Sep 28, 2008 at 02:41 PM

Apple TV refresh possibly the brickI think a wrecking ball just broke through the ceiling of the building I’m sitting in, because bricks are flying everywhere. Hey, look up in the sky! It’s a MacBook Touch…no, a Mac Mini Pro…no, it’s an Apple TV!

Okay, so here’s another rumor to be taken with all that salt your doctor keeps telling you to cut back on. The Apple brick may actually be a refresh of the Apple TV. I’ll let TUAW do the talking.

We just got an e-mail from an anonymous Apple reseller, stating that they received an e-mail from Apple with instructions to remove all Apple TV displays and literature and to destroy them (which I assume means throw away the literature, send back the Apple TVs) by September 30, 2008 at 5 PM. Additionally, the e-mail says that there will be a webcast “kick off” on September 30.

They go on to point out all of the things that someone making a rumor up would make sure to include in their “rumor.” Things like September 30th being a Tuesday, otherwise known as iDay? It’s also reportedly from a reseller, who has been instructed to take down the product that is to be replaced.

I’m beginning to wonder what Apple product isn’t being rumored to experience a refresh in the next month. I know; the Mighty Mouse! Maybe it’ll transition to aluminum as well!

All jokes aside, I don’t believe this one. While it’s certainly possible that Apple could refresh the Apple TV, perhaps with a Blu Ray drive, and maybe combine it with the Mac Mini (Pro) and make an excellent Mac for your TV, I don’t think it’s likely. Good news, though; you don’t have to wait long to find out if any other this materializes. September 30th is only a couple of days away.

An AppleTV which could actually send TV programmes from Safari to your TV might be welcome - in the UK, lots of channels are for free (and thus not available via iTunes). I don’t know what the quality would be like, but I’m sure I’d like that possibility and in the UK, there’s not that much going for Apple TV in my mind without it.
