Apple releases new Mac Pros; 8 cores everywhere

Mac Pros

It’s Tuesday. The week before the Macworld keynote. The Apple store goes down, and all the mac geeks run to their computers and frantically refresh in order to see a new Apple product.  What does Apple do? They release a brand new Mac Pro. This upgrade is actually pretty significant. Every single Mac Pro now has 8-cores. You can buy Mac Pros with 2.8Ghz, 3.0Ghz, or even a 3.2Ghz processor. These beasts support up to 32GB of RAM, however, come with 2GB. They have 4 HD bays, supporting up to 4TB of data storage. Also, these Mac Pros come with a slight raise in price. The standard Mac Pro configuration starts at $2799 and includes:

Two 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors with dual-independent 1600 MHz front side buses;
2GB of 800 MHz DDR2 ECC fully-buffered DIMM memory, expandable up to 32GB;
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of GDDR3 memory;
320GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive running at 7200 rpm;
16x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW);
Two PCI Express 2.0 slots and two PCI Express slots;
Bluetooth 2.0+EDR; and
Ships with Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse.

Quite an awesome machine if I may say so myself. Supporting the new Intel Penryn architecture and the new Harpertown chips. The graphics card has a very healthy bump, with the standard machine coming with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of GDDR3 memory. Even better, is the new NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 memory option. The Mac Pros can now power up to 8 Apple Cinema Display’s simultaneously. However, the best part of this announcement, is that Apple is clearing the way for new notebooks and products at Macworld. Also, with the most expensive iMac and cheapest Mac Pro being so different in pricing, this may open the door for the long-rumored headless desktop Mac.
