Apple offers cell phone recycling program

by Stephen Chinnadorai on Feb 26, 2008 at 01:04 PM

iPod RecyclingApple has certainly been changing their ways since criticism from groups like Greenpeace, who made a whole site dedicated to showing how Apple are not green when manufacturing their products. Mercury has now been removed from their screens, and some of the worst chemicals including Brominate Fire Retardants (BFRs) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) are being removed from their products as of this year.

Another “green” thing Apple is participating in is a brand new recycling program for the iPhone. Previously you were only able to recycle your iPod, now any cellphone, produced by any manufacturer including Apple, can be recycled. There are two ways to participate in this: Either go to an Apple Store or mail them to a central location.

I think this is a great move by Apple, and it’s helping them, too. I can just imagine people disposing of their old phones in a green way, before buying a shiny new iPhone - another reason to switch to an iPhone.
