Apple lays off 50 employees

Despite many other companies releasing employees during the current economic situation, Apple always stated they had no plans to show any employees the door. But now it seems that for both business and financial reasons, they’ve had to let 50 employees go, according to CNET News.

The people in question were an entire sales division based in Austin, TX, and a few employees from Apple’s Cupertino base. But Apple has offered these people the possibility of being re-hired within Apple at another location.

It’s in Apple’s nature to keep things on the down-low. They aim for products to be kept quiet until their launch, and it’s almost the same that applies here. Apple didn’t want to publicly announce these layoffs because of their secrecy element, and shares. Apple’s investors have been on egde since Steve Jobs announced sixth month medical leave. Hearing something along the lines of “We’re not doing to well right now, so we’ve decided to get rid of a few employee’s” won’t help Apple or their investors. They tried to keep Job’s health secret, and they tried the same with this.

It’s not uncommon for companies to scale down their workforces slightly at this time. Should Apple be so conscious about such things? 50 people isn’t that many in the scheme of things, so there’s no reason for Apple’s shares to fall again. Of course, Apple isn’t invincible through the economic crisis, but it’s very likely they, as a company, will be perfectly fine.

50 people.  What percentage of the Apple workforce does that represent?  Also, how many were made redundant last year?  If all or most of the 50 were offered other opportunities within the company, is this still a leading indicator of Apple’s stability as an enterprise?
