Apple iPhone will help boost Canada’s wireless services market

by Josh Holat on Jun 1, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Rogers LogoIndustry insides say Rogers Communications Inc. is likely to unveil an unlimited data plan for a flat rate when the iPhone finally arrives in Canada. What’s more interesting is what analysts believe this will do to the Canadian wireless data market. Itbusness.ca says:

A flat-rate, unlimited data plan is likely to be offered when the iPhone is finally launched in Canada—fueling tremendous interest in wireless services among Canadians. Experts are predicting a shakeup in the wireless service market—and the rise of a new player.

They go on to add that this new player, a competitor to Rogers, will add interest to wireless services in Canada; therefore, it will also lead to the introduction of more competition to Rogers, which will cause a rapid growth for Canada in this area.

This competition will lead to the building of new infrastructures in the larger cities at first, but it will expand to other areas of Canada as well. These new competing companies will also need to acquire some of the spectrum over in Canada to provide these wireless services, as 40% of the spectrum currently belongs to only 10% of the market.  However, lucky for them, there is a wireless spectrum auction going on in Canada during this time, so it is perfect for the introduction of a new player. Lawrence Surtees, vice-president at analyst firm IDC Canada, believes, “it will shake things up in the wireless data market.” What do you think?
