Apple has wanted out of Macworld for some time now

by Jake Gaecke on Dec 17, 2008 at 12:09 PM

Bye bye Macworld
It seems yesterday’s announcement of Apple’s intent to stop exhibiting at Macworld was the culmination of years of desire to stop attending the event. They even reportedly almost quit going in 2002, but for some reason didn’t.

Gizmodo’s Jesus Diaz has this to share.

About two years ago I was sharing some wine with a friend from Apple and he told me: “We are going to phase out all trade shows”. “Even Macworld?,” I asked. “Yes,” he said, “Macworld will go too. I don’t know when, but it will.”

Apparently, these events (more than just Macworld) are not that important, at least not as much as they used to be. And if you think about it, it makes sense. Apple can hold their own special events whenever they want to and get similar results.

So maybe we should have seen this coming. And maybe we should have expected Steve Jobs to stop giving keynotes. No matter what, it will be interesting to see what happens at both this year’s and next year’s Macworld.
