Apple designing their own chips in house?

Yesterday, my favorite rumor broke again. You know, the one about an Apple tablet device for mobile computing. Something along the lines of a netbook without a physical keyboard, perhaps like a super sized iPod touch. That sort of thought process might not be too far off if Venture Beat knows what they’re talking about. Their source says Apple is using their aquisition of PA Semi to design chips for the iPhone and this long rumored Apple Tablet.
Apple acquired PA Semi in April, 2008 for $278 million. It never said what it planned to do with the chip design firm, which featured star chip designers including Dan Dobberpuhl and Jim Keller. But we’ve learned that PA Semi’s team was split into two parts, one designing portable ARM-based processors for iPhones and iPods, and another designing a processor for the tablet device.
No other details are available, but it could add some wood to the fire that is the Apple Tablet. Believe it? I sure want to.
