Apple and China Mobile make up, reach iPhone agreement

by Josh Holat on Jun 27, 2008 at 12:08 PM

chinaflagAlthough we don’t know the dates when the iPhone will appear in China, their iPhone carrier, China Mobile, has said they and Apple have passed the biggest hurdle in the communications. What was the hurdle? According to spokeswoman Rainie Lei, “Apple is no longer insisting on a revenue-sharing policy, so the biggest hurdle for China Mobile to bring in the iPhone has been cleared, but there are practical issues still to be resolved.” This is a major step for the iPhone in China, so let’s just hope the Chinese citizens don’t feel the same way as the Japanese.

I’m happy to see that Apple and China Mobile were able to get further in their talks. The iPhone 3G is going to be a huge product, and I would hate to see an iPhone absence in China as Apple would be missing out on a huge percentage of people. Hopefully, they get it there within a reasonable length of time after its July 11th worldwide release.

    @ Josh -

We can only hope that the Chinese have the same plans as the Japanese.

You are looking at the Japanese numbers all wrong.  9% of the phone buying public say they have plans to buy the iPhone 3G.  That is fantastic news!  If 9% of Chinese buy the iPhone 3G - holy cow!!!  If 9% of Americans bought the iPhone that would be AWESOME.

Apple’s goal is for ~1% of the global cell phone market.

So, hit me again, why was the news out of Japan not pro-iPhone & Apple?

@sfmitch - You are absolutely right, I overlooked how 9%, such a little number, really meant a huge amount of people. Thank you for catching that.
