App Store free apps round-up - October 17, 2008

by Jake Gaecke on Oct 17, 2008 at 11:56 AM

Top free apps on the App StoreThis week was another exceptional week for free and non-free apps and games on the App Store.  As a result, I’ve yet again got a list of apps that you might find useful and games to help you stay entertained.

  • Par 72 Golf Lite - Play golf in full 3D on your iDevice. In this free version, you get 3 holes, one from each of the different courses from the full game. This has all of the frustrations of real golf except walking. But then again, you can’t ride in a golf cart either. You win some, you lose some.
  • SkyScape Medical Resources - This program has a lot of features for medical professionals. It comes with info on over 400 drugs, info and symptoms of diseases, a medical calculator, and important medical updates. This program could be useful to anyone from a student to a physician, or even someone who’s just interested.
  • Marble Mash Full 150 Levels - Like Labyrinth but hate paying? Then this might be the answer. Tilt your iDevice to roll a marble around a series of obstacles (walls and holes). Apparently, the theme is deep space, and the holes are actually black holes. This is quite the freebie offering, so grab it up to waste some time.
  • Touch Hockey - This claims to be the smoothest and most responsive hockey game on the App Store, and at about 60 fps, I believe it. You can challenge others over WiFi. The only real catch here is that it’s ad supported, but it’s only every 5 minutes, so not too bad. This game is super fast, and super fun.
  • Dictionaire - A very simple, though useful dictionary. It, too, is ad supported, but the ads are unobtrusive. I could have used this earlier in the week when I found out that the word “none” can be both singular and plural. I found this out in a math class, of all places. They say you learn something new everyday. Carpe Diem and start learning about words by downloading this one.
  • Carro - To the best of my knowledge, this is the first gas mileage tracking app on the App Store that is free of charge. It’s pretty simple, but it gets the job done. Of course, you could just do this by hand with the Calculator app, but why when you can have a dedicated app?
  • iBaseball - If you liked iGolf and iBowl then iBaseball is just what you need to continue looking like a fool keep the entertainment coming. Not only can you pitch the ball by “throwing” your iDevice, you can bat by “swinging” it as well. All of the nightmares I had when I first heard of the Nintendo Wii are coming back…
  • Lux Touch - Feeling risky? Here’s your chance to command armies. In fact this game enables you to do the same thing I do every night…try to take over the world! You can expect more downloadable content for this game in the future, most likely in the form of a paid DLX version.
