What is it?

MyPlaylists is a very simple, yet very useful utility that allows you to create music playlists right on your iPhone or iPod touch, without the need of a computer. The app also includes an iPod-like interface for listening to your created playlists, and management of the playlists with an interface which is quite similar to that of creating/editing On The Go playlists within the iPod app. There is also a free lite version (iTunes App store link) of MyPlaylists available that has a limit on the number of playlists you can create.

How does it work?

This app would not even be possible on the App Store if it wasn’t for OS and SDK 3.0, which allows iPod library access that was only available for jailbroken devices prior to 3.0. MyPlaylists takes full advantage of this new OS feature, as practically the whole app is based on accessing information from the iPod library. Once you start up MyPlaylists, you are able to start creating playlists right away. You name your new playlist, select which songs you’d like in your playlist (unfortunately, you cannot select songs from existing playlists, which is quite upsetting when you have many songs to sort through), and you’re good to go. However, another downside is that you cannot export playlists that are created within the app into your iPod app (due to iPhone SDK restrictions), so you must always open MyPlaylists to listen to playlists you’ve created with it. However, since MyPlaylists comes with a built-in media player interface, this is not too big of a problem. Lastly, if you have any playlists in your iPod app that you’d like to edit within MyPlaylists, you can easily import them and edit them all you’d like, although they are not changed within the iPod app, as the playlists are merely copied into MyPlaylists.

App it Up, Sum it Up

MyPlaylists is a very useful application for people with large music libraries who like organizing their music into playlists. There are few (if any) applications in the App Store that mimic its functionality, and it’s definitely useful for the tasks it performs, especially for its low price tag of $0.99. If you can’t afford to cough up the 99 cents or would like to try before you buy, you can check out the lite version of the app.

Cost - $0.99
Worth the Money? - Definitely.
Availability - Now, in the iTunes App Store.
