4th gen iPhone to be taller and include front facing camera?

4th Gen iPhone?

iResQ has posted some pictures of what they believe to be the glass for the 4th generation iPhone. There are two notable differences from the current iPhone glass. First, it’s taller (1/4 inch) and it has an extra hole. Gee whiz, I wonder what we think that’s for…

The rumor that just won’t die. This extra hole in the glass certainly could be for an extra, front facing camera for video chatting. I won’t deny it; I want one, that’s for sure. But at the same time, I find it too good to be true. Parts like this aren’t that difficult to fabricate, so I’m not totally sold.

iResQ claims this part is from a very reliable source, and that I don’t doubt. I’m just having a hard time thinking Apple would want to change the size of the iPhone. While I’d like to have a larger screen, an increase of just a quarter of an inch seems unnecessary, especially after we all have accessories that depend on the current form factor. At least it appears to be the same width. But then again, forcing you to buy all new accessories isn’t something that Apple, or pretty much any other company, would feel bad about.

Believe it? You decide.

Assuming this is true. The extra height does not appear to affect the screen from these pics. The bottom of the screen on the larger face starts a little higher than the current gen face on the left and the top ends a little higher than the current gen face. So, if true, screen size is the same as always. As a side note, I love rumors. Anyone ever release a rumor siting that their source wasn’t reliable and well trusted? If someone had the guts to do that, then I MIGHT believe their rumor. Doubtful, but maybe.

Yeah, perhaps the extra room is necessary for a camera.  I still feel like if the device is going to get bigger, the screen should be the reason, and here it isn’t.  I might forgive this design change if it ended up being thinner.

On your side note, actually yes, I have seem many unreliable rumors marked as such.  But even reliable sources are wrong sometimes, especially with Apple, so unreliable rumors are about as credible as (I’d like to think less than :) my speculation.  Still, I think Apple keeps track of consumer response to rumors, so fake rumors could actually have some sort of impact on future products.
