$19.99 premium game area for iPhone

by Ed Parry on Feb 2, 2009 at 03:37 PM
is gaming on the iPhone becoming more serious?

As the iPhone begins to shine as a portable gaming device, Apple plans to have a “premium games” area within the App Store for $19.99 titles. This move would separate the big titles from the silly $0.99 apps, but would only be open to the main publishers such as Electronic Arts. While this seems a good move, it would mean that independent publishers such as Ethan Nicholas, creator of iShoot, would be held back with the thousands of other applications.

This addition to the App Store confirms thoughts of the iPhone becoming a fully-fledged gaming device, and with more rumors of an iPhone 3 appearing, it would seem quite a safe bet.

Would you give up your Sony PSP or Nintendo DS for an iPhone/iPod touch for gaming? Sure, the bonus of your music library and WiFi is enough to sway some, but what about more serious gamers? I enjoy the games I have on my iPhone and play a lot of them regularly. Gaming is not my strong point, so a quick lap on FerarriGT or a short flight on X Plane is enough to keep me entertained.
