1,000,000 viruses? Ahh, the joys of owning a Mac!

by Josh Holat on Apr 15, 2008 at 09:00 AM

Apple Security LockAccording to the latest release of Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report, the number of malicious programs (worms, trojans, etc) has reached the one million mark.  More specifically, it is now at 1,122,311.  It’s at times like these when I really enjoy having a Mac.  I’m sure the vast majority of the programs in this report are Windows only, which makes this more of a problem for Microsoft.  However, Apple can’t get ignore the fight against malicious programs and still needs to make sure to keep their OS secure.  With the number of Mac OS X users growing everyday, there is no doubt in my mind that, eventually, somebody will be able to release some pretty nasty viruses into Apple’s operating system.  When the time comes, let’s hope Apple is prepared because I enjoy not having to continually update any sort of virus protection on my Mac.

It’s a shame that there are people who make this kind of stuff, but, unfortunately, the threat is real.  Apple has been known for having a pretty secure platform for a long time, and I would hate to see that reputation go away.  What are your thoughts on the enormous number of malicious programs there are today?
