My AppleCare experience

by Richard Hendrix on Mar 25, 2008 at 11:53 AM

applecareWhen I signed up to write at Appletell nearly two months ago, I had planned to write frequently, but soon after I began writing, things took a turn for the worst. The problem was that my 15” powerbook G4 kept randomly shutting down about every 9 or 10 hours. Because I had purchased the AppleCare extended warranty, I was eligible to receive repairs free of charge. I called up AppleCare (1-800-APL-CARE) and explained the situation to a representative.

They decided to send me a box which I would send the computer back to them in to get it repaired. After a couple of days, I got the box in the mail, and after about 2 weeks I got the computer back from the repair center. I eagerly fired it up, and everything seemed fine, but I would soon find that instead of every 9 or 10 hours, it was now shutting down every 2-3 hours. I called up AppleCare again and I was shortly transferred to a senior repair representative. He was very nice, and said that he would be happy to set me up for a second, expedited repair. This time, after only 1 week, I got my computer back, but only to find out that my computer was now shutting down every 40 minutes. I called my representative at his direct number and spoke to him about the situation.

Will the Macbook Pro update ever come?

by Richard Hendrix on Feb 23, 2008 at 12:35 PM

Macbook Pro

Many have been carefully following the forums across the internet wondering when Apple will release an updated version of their flagship notebook, the Macbook Pro. The last time the Macbook Pro was updated was on June 5th, 2007, and in order to keep up with the competition, Apple must update soon. One can usually get a pretty good bearing on where Apple is heading by looking at Intel’s roadmap (Apple’s sole processor supplier). In January 2008, Intel released their newest processor, the core 2 duo Penryn, which basically brings faster Front-side bus, about .4Mhz faster speeds, and greater power efficiency.

Many are also speculating that Apple will update the video card in the machine, in addition to higher capacity hard drives and a multi-touch trackpad, which made it’s debut in the Macbook Air. The big mystery is when this update will be released. Some speculated that it would be released at Apple’s “special event” with Linkin Park, but that was busted after Linkin Park came and went at an Apple store in New York with no announcement. I would hedge my bets on some time within the next two to three weeks, but it’s anyone’s guess. Many have noted, however, that many Apple stores’ stocks of Macbook Pros are running low, hinting at an imminent update. My advice: if you absolutely must have one now, buy it, but if you can wait a few more weeks, then wait.
