iFuntastic v3 - Now available

by Zach Flauaus on Aug 30, 2007 at 12:05 PM

ifuntastic_v3For those who love hacking the iPhone and are fans of iFuntastic v2, you’ll have even more reasons to love version 3. One of the biggest improvements: PowerPC compatibility. So for those of you out there still running on those classic machines (raises hand), you too can now hack your iPhone to your heart’s desire. It also allows you to install applications via a file browser, upload those old NES ROMs for all you nostalgic folks, and many more features, which will be listed below.

In iFuntastic v2, you could re-arrange your home screen icons, which was cool and all, but now in v3, you can have multiple pages of icons for all your applications that you may install. Also on the home screen, you can now put a wallpaper on there and also rotate to your liking. iFuntastic v3 can also rip the 30-second iTunes Music Store preview for you and upload it to your iPhone as a ringtone. Full list of features below:

* PowerPC support! Finally. Thanks for keeping the faith :-)
* One-time unjailing - called ‘Unshackling’.
* Drag and drop any file onto the phone in the new ‘File Manager’ (formerly Browser :-)
* Edit text files directly on the phone.
* Drag and drop installation of native applications - no restart of the phone necessary.
* Info page: a one-stop-shop for all documentation (still sparsely populated right now, sorry.)
* Troubleshooting page: a one-stop-shop for pummeling the phone and inquiring about its status.
* Much improved ringtone installation.
* Drag and drop replacement of system sounds.
* Completely reworked Home Screen Editor. Place applications anywhere you want them (gaps are OK.)
* Support for multiple home screen ‘pages’. Have up to 80 applications at your fingertips!
* Custom home screen ‘wallpaper’, better called home screen backgrounds, to distinguish from the ‘real’ wallpaper.

OS X 10.5 Leopard Build 9A527/9A528a Released

by Zach Flauaus on Aug 26, 2007 at 07:55 PM

leopard
And conquer it will.

Everybody’s favorite next-gen operating system has just had a new build of it released to developers. Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard build 9A527 (client) and 9A528 (server) has been released to the applicable developers so they can, of course, see if their software can run properly on it and what changes need to be made to make it compatible. That’s the legal side of it. Of course, the consumers are anxious to see what’s in store with just little bits of information being released every time a new build is being released, and this one is not one to balk at. Not that many new features, but more details have been released.

The final candidate is set to be released “Late August/early September,” afterwards it will be tested for 4-6 weeks before reaching the coveted “Golden Master” level. Also released include a YouTube video of the new Leopard intro (hint: space), the new Leopard default background (hint: space), and four screenshots of the OS itself (hint: not space-related). I must say that Leopard is shaping up to be a fine OS and I really want to be in line on the day it is released. I just hope it’s released at 6:00PM so I have time to get to the Apple Store after school (read: Hour and a half drive).

iPhone: Now on any GSM Carrier!

by Zach Flauaus on Aug 26, 2007 at 03:36 PM

iphone-on-tmobileYes, you are reading that right. Engadget has confirmed that the iPhone has been unlocked using software only. Apparently the folks over at iPhoneSIMFree.com (I kept reading it as iPhones IM Free) contacted Engadget (why not us?) and basically gave them the heads up and sent over a few screen shots of the newly unlocked iPhone. Everything is reported to be working out of the box except for YouTube. Safari, Mail, SMS, and Google Maps all work out of the box after possibly changing a few network settings. Oh, and that phone feature works too, but it’s the 21st century, who uses that anymore?

A few things to note from their entry:

The General -> Network menu now has an EDGE network settings area where you can input your carrier’s APN and username / password. We put in our T-Mobile info, and were immediately online. (Apparently these hidden menus were added in the 1.0.1 update, they tell us. How convenient!)

Visual voicemail isn’t in the cards—sorry. That was, of course, to be expected because it’s a special AT&T network-specific feature right now. When you hit the voicemail button you are taken immediately to your carrier’s default voicemail line though, and that works just like it would on any other phone.

They are also claiming that the unlock is restore/upgrade proof and will not be affected in future software updates. They did a reinstall of 1.0.2 and it was still there, but hopefully it will still be unlocked when 1.0.3 is released and from then on.

Doc Macenstein gets his colored iPhone

by Zach Flauaus on Aug 13, 2007 at 09:58 PM

coloware-iphoneFor those who aren’t happy with the standard silver, black, and chrome color scheme on their iPhone, you may be aware that ColorWare can color your iPhone, for a premium that is. You may know ColorWare for adding some color to your iPod or a few other Apple products. Well, if you wanted to see what ColorWare’s paint jobs will do, the time has come.

Doc Macenstein has posted a gallery of photos of his shiny iPhone, which is now green with envy. Well, at least those viewing this gallery may become envious. The back cover and the dock are “Envy Green” while the base and the chrome is “Carbon,” which makes for a very nice looking combination.

For those who want the complete paint job including the back cover, dock, earbuds, and the “Home” button, it will cost you a pretty penny: $219 all together. In addition to spending $219, you will also have to wait approximately 3 weeks for the paint job to be finished, so we recommend that you have a secondary phone available if you send your own phone in. But your reward will be oh so sweet. For complete gallery of pics, click the link below.

Updates released by Apple

by Zach Flauaus on Aug 1, 2007 at 02:24 AM

software-updateApple and their developers have been quite busy lately and all their work, well some of it at least, has come out for the public. They released Security Update 2007-007, Safari Beta 3.0.3 for both OS X and Windows, iPhone firmware 1.01, and Airport Extreme Update 2007-004.

Security Update 2007-007 is available and recommended for all 10.3.9 and 10.4.10 PPC and Intel users. The list of issues addressed include bzip2, CFNetwork, Core Audio, cscope, gnuzip, Kerberos, mDNSResponder, PDFKit, PHP, Quartz Composer, samba, WebKit, and WebCore. The complete list of fixes can be found here with detailed explanations of what it’s available for, the impact of the batch, and a brief description.

Safari Beta 3.0.3 is also available and recommended for users on either platform. The update fixes a flaw in Safari itself where it can load “unexpected ... code executions” and three flaws in WebKit, Safari’s rendering engine, for various other reasons. You can find more information here.

iPhone firmware 1.0.1 was also released, and is once again recommended for iPhone users. The log, as well as reports from other sites, say that fixes are only in Safari, which help keep Safari more stable than previously. There are no added features, although there are rumors that a new update could be heading soon with added features such as MMS.

There is also a smaller update for Intel-based MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini users that help fix an issue when using Airport Extreme in 10.4.10. We posted about this before and had a lot of feedback from you guys experiencing the same problem, so please let us know if it fixes the problems you’re having.

All these updates are available through either Apple Software Update, Apple’s website, or iTunes for the iPhone update.

iPhone is now Immortalized

by Zach Flauaus on Jul 31, 2007 at 10:12 AM

iphonecakeNo gadget is worthwhile until it is, wait for it… made into a cake. First there was the iPod cake, then the iPod mini cake, then a whole page dedicated to the iPod family of cakes, and now the iPhone has one to claim its own.

That’s right, the iPhone is now edible for all you who can’t get AT&T where you live, or don’t want to hack your iPhone. The person who created this cake also has a whole gallery of cakes just waiting to be dined upon by your feasting eyes. He also has some other impressive creations such as a firetruck, the Thunderbird logo, a Maverick’s logo, and many more. Be sure to hit the link to check more of his creations out.

New Widgets found in iPhone Firmware?

by Zach Flauaus on Jul 31, 2007 at 05:36 AM

iphonefirmwareThe folks over at iPhoneology took the iPhone’s file system off the device and starting looking into it closely. They found a preference file called “DefaultApplicationState.plist,” which includes a list of the usual applications on the iPhone such as the calculator, iPod, Mail, Notes, Safari, and the others. But it also included three other “non-activated” widgets as well as two other applications.

  • com.apple.unitconverter
  • com.apple.widget.phonebook
  • com.apple.widget.translation
  • com.apple.widget.worldclock
  • com.apple.mobile.radio

The applications you may remember from Dashboard are the Unit Converter, Phonebook, Translation, and World Clock, but mobile.radio is new. The features of the mobile.radio. are pretty much anybodies guess. Some are saying streaming radio a la iTunes, or a wild-throw on either Sirius or XM Satellite Radio, or an integrated FM tuner. I believe it’s for Apple’s Radio Remote that you plug into the dock connector and can listen to FM that way.

As TUAW notes, this is all speculation. As with patents, just because the files are in there doesn’t mean they will actually incorporate them into the next iPhone software version. They are also saying that a few folks are believing they’re just “holdovers from Apple’s translation of OS X to the iPhone firmware.” Whatever the reason may be, we have to remember that more widgets and applications are most likely planned for the iPhone, so this could be a sign of things to come.

Help needed to polish USB Apple TV hack

by Zach Flauaus on Jul 30, 2007 at 01:51 AM

appletv-hacksOnly two days after the highly anticipated USB patch for the Apple TV was released, AppleTV Hacks is calling on volunteers to help clean the code up. Now that the code is out in the open, they are calling on people to help add more features and make it easier to use.

As they said, when they released the patch Friday night, it was pretty restrictive. It required you have have an Intel Mac or Intel-*nix box, an Apple TV running software version 1.0 with ssh enabled among other things. Their highest priority, according to them on their site, is to make the patch work with Apple TV software version 1.1, which added YouTube support, among others. They would also like to expand the hacking to other platforms, namely PPC OS X computers and Windows as well so everybody will have a chance to join in on the fun. Their last request: a convenient, easy-to-use GUI program to make it much easier for less-savvy hackers.

If you’d like to help them, you can download their source here and if you have some coding skills, can decipher and modify the code to help them achieve their goals.

New interface improvements for Leopard

by Zach Flauaus on Jul 29, 2007 at 02:55 PM

leopard-conquerWhen Leopard was originally shown off at WWDC 2007, there were plenty of features shown off. Finder was upgraded, the Dock had an overhaul, Spaces was shown, among others. Although these will no doubt be some of the biggest features in Leopard, one of the most noticeable changes was the interface. They showed off the new dock, how the menu bar is now translucent, and the fact that they aren’t doing a new Aqua wallpaper.

Earlier this week, Apple gave developers new builds of OS X 10.5 and 10.5 Server, which would be Build 9A499. Think Secret has posted a few shots of some minor changes. The dock has changed in that in between the Applications and the Folders/Trash Can section, the divider instead of being a vertical line is now something that resembles a crosswalk. Also, the menu bar is polished so the icons go better with the new translucent menu bar.

There are two other noted interface changes. One being that the System Preferences icon, which previously was a light switch, is now resembling the Settings icon on the iPhone. The other change is in Finder, which you can now set to always “Show Path Bar” so you can find where the file is located at.

A feature addition in iChat was also added. Google Talk is now built-in, possibly because of the relationship between the two on the iPhone.

There are a few other changes mentioned in the article and Think Secret is also claiming that they will publish a full screenshot gallery “shortly.”

iFuntastic now in version 2

by Zach Flauaus on Jul 29, 2007 at 11:23 AM

ifuntasticAs the iPhone Dev Wiki team is busy figuring out what they can all do to hack the living stuff out of the iPhone, some developers are making hacking a little more accessible to the “not-so-keen-on-terminal” group. One of those developers has updated iFuntastic to version 2. iFuntastic was originally released as a GUI solution to hacking the iPhone, but it has a few kinks in it, one of the biggest ones: the package wouldn’t open. You had to rename it to “iFuntastic.”

Here’s a list of modified/new features:

  • iFuntastic will now work when renamed. Previously, the package *had* to be named ‘iFuntastic’.
  • Carrier logos don’t have a special PNG format, after all; regular PNGs will do! That means you can very easily create your own.
  • Renamed ‘Display Order’ to ‘Home Screen’ and removed restrictions on icon movement. It turns out that icons can be freely moved about! Made the hidden ‘DemoApp’ and ‘FieldTest’ apps visible and introduced a ‘pasteboard’ where you can move applications from the Home Screen to hide them.
  • Added ‘.m4p’ as a recognized song file format.
  • Added a news feature to the Welcome screen, displaying this info.
  • Added more sample logos and ringtones.

iPhone Alley gives you two choice’s to download it from, either their own site or Rapidshare. You can download iFuntastic v2 for free, links on iPhone Alley.
