MacBook Air Remote Disk quite limited

by Michael Mistretta on Jan 25, 2008 at 05:11 PM

Remote Disc

The MacBook Air has been landing all over, and all the Mac Geeks have been unboxing them and trying them out. Engadget has given us a sneak peak at some of the features of Remote Disc, one of the MacBook Air’s features. Steve Jobs touted it at Macworld by saying that you could install software remotely. He failed to mention that that was pretty much all you could do. Taking about 86MB on the server Mac or PC, you can’t watch DVDs, listen to audio CDs, or even burn DVDs remotely. Fortunately however, you can boot from a remote CD or DVD by holding down the option key when starting up. This will allow you to choose a wifi network from the BIOS, and boot off that CD. Wireless performance has yet to be tested.

iPhone 1.1.3 ready for third-party apps

by Michael Mistretta on Jan 25, 2008 at 08:07 AM

iPhone 1.1.3

Nate True, iPhone hacker extraordinaire, has found that the iPhone 1.1.3 update shows signs of third-party app support. The update has prepared the iPhone and iPod Touch for native applications in many different ways.

First, the SpringBoard has been updated to show additional apps on additional home screens. Also, applications now share a decided “mobile” user account, and the preferences have been moved to a non-root directory. This hints that Apple will not be giving developers root access to the device, but instead will have a specialized account that allows for third-party apps. It is still to be seen how much access Apple will give developers with the SDK planned for a public release in February.

Apple execs reward themselves with large bonuses

by Michael Mistretta on Jan 24, 2008 at 03:42 PM

Apple Execs Bonuses

Apple had a great year last year. And the Apple Executives have decided that they deserve some sort of reward. Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer, usually receives a $600,000 a year salary. Not bad. However, all that seems like peanuts when he got a $600,000 bonus in addition to his regular salary, bringing his total income for the year up to $1.2 million. Also, Chief Operating Officer Timothy Cook received a $700,000 salary, and a bonus that doubled that to $1.4 million. Steve Jobs however, continues to get a $1 a year salary, but Apple’s Compensation Committee is considering paying some sort of bonus to Steve Jobs. Most of the money Jobs gets comes from his 5.5 million Apple stocks.

John Mayer has a MacBook Air before they are shipping

by Michael Mistretta on Jan 24, 2008 at 02:45 PM

MacBook Air John Mayer

If you have been a regular attendant for Steve Jobs keynote, no doubt you’ve heard John Mayer many a time. Steve Jobs loves his music, and he plays at the end of most Stevenotes. However, when Steve Jobs introduced Randy Newman at this Macworld keynote, people thought that John Mayer’s friendship with Steve was over. Apparently not however. John Mayer is one of the few people in the world that actually has a MacBook Air weeks before they are shipping. Of course he posted a tantalizing blog post with two pictures on the MacBook Air and a single line, “Macbook Air… Yes, it really is as cool as it looks. Lean, mean lifestyle workstation…”

Looks very cool John, very cool…

They have started to ship from Apple’s factories as of last night, and are scheduled to arrive on Friday for some customers. iPhone 1.1.3 Hacked; not for the faint of heart

by Michael Mistretta on Jan 23, 2008 at 09:29 PM

iPhone HackBecause of the firmware leak of iPhone 1.1.3, hackers from the iPhone Dev Team and iPhone Atlas have hacked and jailbroken 1.1.3 already. They apparently have Installer.app working on the latest iPhone firmware, but will not be releasing the hack yet, because they don’t want Apple to patch it before the SDK comes out. At that point, it may be worth it to just wait for the official Apple solution to third-party apps. And I don’t know if you really want to hack your 1.1.3 iPhone. Apparently, it involves some sort of “hardware modification”. Doesn’t sound pretty. The hacked 1.1.3 youtube video is after the jump.

Where’s the iPhone two-pane email client?

by Michael Mistretta on Jan 23, 2008 at 12:38 PM

iPhone Mail

There are many products and features that get developed inside of Apple and other companies, that never get released. If Steve Jobs, or another one of the top-ranking exec decides that the feature is unnecessary, or just clutters the interface it is cut. One of those features that never saw the light of day, was the iPhone two-pane Mail view. Back at Macworld 2007, when Steve Jobs previewed the iPhone for the world, he showed a second Mail view that would allow you to preview the contents of a Mail message in the same window. After Macworld, he made a comment about not liking this view. Then surprise surprise. When June 29th comes around, the iPhone launches without this view. Was it not working? Or was it just a matter of something Steve Jobs didn’t like, and got cut out of the iPhone?

Which do you prefer: the current view or a two pane view?

Steve Jobs leaks new Time Machine features

by Michael Mistretta on Jan 22, 2008 at 04:31 PM

Steve Jobs TM features

If you have super-eagle eyes, and were watching the new HD stream of the Macworld 2008 keynote, you might have noticed that Steve Jobs showed a screenshot of Time Machine with a new button in the lower left-hand corner entitled, “Only Show Changes”. Apparently, this new button will allow you to see only the changes that were made over the days of your backups, most likely hiding the other redundant information. This could be an upcoming feature in Mac OS X 10.5.2, which is expected to include remote Time Machine backups, Menu-bar opacity options, and over 100 bug fixes.

Jobs on whether the Zune is a “worthy alternative”

by Michael Mistretta on Jan 21, 2008 at 11:16 AM

Steve and his Zune

When Microsoft announced the new Zune’s back in November, Microsoft’s Robbie Bach made a comment that finally, the Zune was “a worthy alternative” to the iPod. Steve Jobs was questioned about that comment by an interviewer this week at Macworld. The response was very unexpected. Some may even say it was harsh.

“Was he inebriated?” Jobs asked CNBC reporter Jim Goldman, and then continued with, “Do you even know anyone who owns a Zune?”

Funny, I don’t know anyone who owns a Zune. Last summer when I went on a trip, I saw one man in an airport with one, and stared at it as if it was a relic. Obviously, Steve Jobs doesn’t even consider the Zune a worthy alternative, and is having a good laugh in Cupertino while the guys in Redmond are welcoming people to the social.

Get a Mac and have a “Happy New Year”

by Michael Mistretta on Jan 21, 2008 at 02:04 AM

Get a Mac

Apple keeps pushing out new Get a Mac ads, and for the past couple of keynotes including WWDC and Macworld, Steve Jobs has chose to start it off by having a new ad play. At Macworld 2008 this year, Apple played a new “Happy New Year” Get a Mac ad, which focuses on what the Mac and the PC accomplished this year. As always, John Hodgeman is funnier than ever, and Justin Long tries to play along. The PC tells the world how bad of a year he has had, and how the failure of Vista and the success of Leopard, as well as the release of the new iMacs, iPods, and iPhone has ruined his year. Then of course he ends, with a funny remark saying how 2008 is going to be a great year as he copies all the Mac has done in 2007.

Video of the ad is after the break
