Appletell reviews Cat Piano for iPhone, iPod touch

by Anthony Parkinson on Feb 6, 2009 at 11:45 PM

The title of this application is 100% on target; it’s a cat piano for your iPhone/iPod touch, and it’s actually pretty good at it. Anyone who knows anything about music will notice that the piano is just a couple of notes larger than an entire octave (14 notes total). The keyboard is highly responsive, even when using glissando. You can also play polyphonic chords, which is kind of overkill, if you ask me; it is not enjoyable to me to listen to multiple cats in C-minor.

Appletell reviews Bugz for iPhone, iPod touch

by Anthony Parkinson on Feb 6, 2009 at 01:28 PM

My first impression of the game is that it reminds me of a scene transition from That 70s Show, or a skit from Yo Gabba Gabba. Very trippy and psychedelic. Kinda cool. The first time I played the game, however, I did notice that the gameplay is identical to an application I have already reviewed: Sneezies. You start a chain reaction of explosions, and if another bug is touched, it, too, explodes, thereby causing a chain reaction. That is if you’re successful.

How the iPhone can change Telecommunications forever

by Anthony Parkinson on Feb 4, 2009 at 12:48 PM

We all can agree that the iPhone is a revolution. Well, I just so happen to work in the Telecommunications sector and I can see the iPhone becoming more that just a “fad.” I envision a world where there are no more traditional POTS (plain old telephone service) and PSTN (public switched telephone network) lines. How is this for a theory? ...

Appletell reviews Voila screen capture and image editing utility

by Anthony Parkinson on Jan 29, 2009 at 07:08 AM

Viola is a Mac OS X application that makes taking screenshots a cake walk. What sets this apart from other software in its class are the several editing features that are part of the suite. One of the features you notice when you first launch the application is that Viola is integrated with Mail and iPhoto. You can send your screenshots to anyone in just a few clicks, and the same goes for importing/exporting to iPhoto. In the same area, you will also find a View Options button that allows you to set the display as you see fit. There are three options available. Another nice feature is the ability to zoom in and out on the screen shot itself, which allows you to do some really nice editing. It’s not as powerful as Photoshop, but for screen capture software it can zoom in quite close, allowing you to get quite detailed.

Appletell reviews MyDecider for iPhone, iPod touch

by Anthony Parkinson on Jan 19, 2009 at 09:06 AM

decision1

The idea behind this application for the iPhone or iPod Touch is to actually help you make a decision. This is not a game or an attempt and a magic 8 ball kind of thing, this is an actual productivity decision maker. I don’t think I want a phone to make decisions for me, but that is what the developer is trying to accomplish here. What Mydecider does is take a set of criteria you designate and rate the importance to you and calculates a decision based on the input. Again, that is something I would not want my phone to do for me.

How Apple can benefit from a “Jobs-less” existence

by Anthony Parkinson on Jan 15, 2009 at 10:20 AM

steve_jobs
First off, let me say I wish Steve Jobs and his family good health. I never like to write pieces about someone who is not at the top of their game due to a health issue. Get well, Steve, we will miss you. Now then, on to what the next six months, maybe more, have in store for Apple…

Appletell reviews Textopolis game for iPhone, iPod touch

by Anthony Parkinson on Jan 13, 2009 at 08:52 AM

The idea of Textopolis for iPhone and iPod touch is to use the letters of the city (level) that you are on to spell as many words as you can. There are a total of 30 cities available, and to get to the next city you must get at least 10% of all the possible words. The words must be at least four letters long. Let me say that I spell like a 4th grader, so the fact that you can use plurals is a great help for me. That also means I have not been able to advance to the harder cities in the game such as Ulyanovsk, or Saskatoon.

Appletell reviews Scoops game for iPhone, iPod touch

by Anthony Parkinson on Jan 12, 2009 at 01:25 PM

ScoopsIf you had a choice between ice cream and vegetables, most people would pick the ice cream for all of its sugary goodness. Well, that is exactly what you are required to do in Scoops. You start off with an empty waffle cone. Ice cream and vegetables start falling from the sky, and you need to catch the ice cream in the cone by tilting your device left and right to move the cone accordingly. Ice cream good, vegetables bad. You start with three stars, and if you are unlucky enough to catch a vegetable, it takes a star away. When you are down to zero, the game is over.

Appletell reviews WiFinder for iPhone

by Anthony Parkinson on Jan 11, 2009 at 03:49 PM

There are three ways for you to connect to a network with your iPhone. In order of speed from slowest to fastest, they are EDGE, 3G, and WiFi. If you have an iPod Touch you only have the WiFi option available to you. WiFi is a wireless standard that was developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). 802.11 is the original wireless specification. Extensions of the 802.11 standard were given the same number with a letter suffix (A, B, C, D and so on, all the way to N as of today). Enter the WiFinder from Lars Bergstrom. WiFinder does exactly what it’s name implies. It finds WiFi networks for your device to connect to.

iPhoto Faces and Places deeper look

by Anthony Parkinson on Jan 11, 2009 at 02:49 PM

iphoto_icon_thumbFace recognition. Wow. We have the same—if not better—technology as the local police station. How freakin’ cool is that? iPhoto is groundbreaking in the fact that you can train it to recognize someone’s face and know where you took the picture. Let me introduce you to Faces and Places.
