iPhone prices cut in Austria

by Alec Feld on Jan 19, 2009 at 09:55 PM

iPhone 3GT-Mobile Austria has decided to drop iPhone prices, hoping the new deal will bring in more customers. While the 8GB iPhone 3G retailed for €99 with a €45 monthly plan, it now costs a measly €1 with the same exact plan. That’s a €98 discount, starting today. And if this price cut isn’t enough, T-Mobile is waiving fees for the first month and offering a €45 discount for those who place their orders online.

Apple calls 2009 its last year at Macworld Conference and Expo

by Alec Feld on Dec 16, 2008 at 05:11 PM

Macworld
Apple announced today that its keynote and exhibition at Macworld 2009 will be its last. Macworld, a Mac centered conference that has been running since 1985, will no longer have Apple included in it’s broad range of exhibitors. The final keynote will be held on January 6th, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. PST, and it will be presented by Phil Schiller. No Steve…let the rampant speculation begin.

The conference will run from January 5th - 9th. Apple explains it’s decision with a simple fact: trade shows reach a small percentage of customers. With newer methods such as Apple Retail stores and the Apple Store online, conferences and expos are becoming a thing of the past, and Apple realizes its just not worth the resources. Apple’s Retail stores are visited by 3.5 million people each and every week, with the online store being accessed by even more consumers.

Apple has shown a steady progression of retracting from trade shows, and it seems to have left the most prominent of them all.

Copy and paste now (sort of) working on iPhone, most problems in the world gone

by Alec Feld on Dec 13, 2008 at 10:57 PM

Pastebud
Although many bugs have been fixed and many features have been added to the iPhone’s OS, two key features remain missing, copy and paste. Until Apple adds in their own copy and paste method, the problem has been solved thanks to the wonders of javascript. The “app” responsible for these features isn’t really an app at all, it’s a bookmarklet, which allows it to avoid the App Store. Two bookmarks, or bookmarklets in Safari control the actual copying and pasting, with the text selected able to be sent to both Mail and the clipboard. Once text is highlighted and copied, either a mail document or another web page to paste the text in is found. Once found, the “paste” bookmarklet takes care of the rest, highlighting areas in which the copied text can be pasted. Select the area, and the text is automatically pasted from the clipboard.

Of course, this doesn’t seem like a permanent solution. Hopefully, Apple will be implementing copy and paste sometime soon. In the meantime, this service, provided by pastebud, will have to do the job.

LittleSnapper 1.0 released into the wild

by Alec Feld on Dec 12, 2008 at 08:50 AM

LittleSnapperScreenshots seem to be all the rage nowadays; Realmac Software realized this and started building an app designed specifically for screenshots, LittleSnapper. Although the app was in beta for a good amount of time, LittleSnapper seems to have had (most) of its bugs fixed and has been released to the public in a 1.0 non-beta version. LittleSnapper isn’t used just for screenshots of your desktop, it’s used for screenshots of web pages and other windows with important information in them. Plug-ins aren’t required for taking screenshots of web pages; simply hit a keyboard shortcut or the menubar icon, and done, the web page has been fully captured in a screenshot. You can also capture the code of webpages for archive use, use a DOM selector, apply quick edits to images, and organize screenshots in the application itself. Once captured, images can be upload to any FTP server, Flickr, or QuickSnapper, a new service specifically designed to work with LittleSnapper.

Sadly, this utility isn’t going to run you cheap. Single user licenses are up for grabs at $39.99, which include free upgrades until version 2.0.
