The MacBook Air Song: New Soul by Yael Naim

by Doug Berger on Feb 19, 2008 at 07:27 PM

I’m a new soul I came to this strange world hoping I could learn a bit about how to give and take.
But since I came here
Felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

Apple Store down, updates are on their way

by Doug Berger on Feb 19, 2008 at 08:08 AM

Happy Tuesday folks.  It looks like the Apple Store is down this morning, so we’re waiting patiently for some product updates to show their faces.  The store has been down a few times this month so far, and has included such updates as Apperture 2, the 16GB iPhone, and the 32GB iPod Touch.  Hopefully we see something a bit more exciting this time.  We’ll hit you back in a bit when updates come through.

Breaking: New 16GB iPhone, 32GB iPod touch models hit the Apple Store

by Doug Berger on Feb 5, 2008 at 08:55 AM

iPhone iPod touch itouchIn another case of rumor-becomes-the-truth, Apple has just silently launched the new 16GB iPhone, and 32GB iPod touch via the Apple Store.  The new touch line comes in 8, 16, and now 32GB flavors, and the iPhone now comes in 8 and 16GB models.  The 16GB iPhone retails for $499, and the 32GB iPod touch for $499 as well.  Head over to the Apple Store to pick up yours.  Oh, and I’m glad there wasn’t a Macbook update - because as I mentioned, I just told someone to buy one.

The Apple Store is down…

Apple Store be back soon - Appletell

We can’t say for sure what changes are being made to Apple’s product lines - if any - but the Apple Store is currently showing the classic splash-screen.  According to Gizmodo, the updates are going to be “minor,” and it’s only the U.S. store that’s down.  Will we see a spec boost in the Macbook line - or the Macbook Pro line?  Hopefully the latter since I just told a friend it was safe to buy a Macbook.  Whoops!

More to come as we find out what’s going on.

iPhone to go on sale June 29 at 6:00 PM local time

by Doug Berger on Jun 15, 2007 at 10:30 AM

Earlier this week at Steve Jobs’ WWDC keynote, he announced that Apple’s new iPhone will be available starting June 29 at 6:00 PM local time.  Since that is as vague as vague can be, there has been some confusion whether that meant 6:00 PM San Francisco time, or literally 6:00 PM for each market, AT&T has issued a memo on the topic:

The iPhone will go on sale on at AT&T retail stores June 29 at 6 p.m. local time in each market.

So whether you’re in New York, or California, when the clock strikes 6:00 PM on release day, you can expect to get your iPhone - that is if they’re not sold out already.

No Flash support on iPhone?

by Doug Berger on Jun 13, 2007 at 05:30 PM

Up to this point, it sounds like the iPhone will not support Adobe’s Flash plugin for Safari - which is kind of strange considering how great Steve Jobs makes the browser out to be.  Jobs has however, made it clear that the iPhone will support YouTube, but not by using their Flash player.  Instead, Apple is making them convert their library to a higher quality h.264.  According to MacRumors:

Jobs: “Yeah, YouTube—of course. But you don’t need to have Flash to show YouTube. All you need to do is deal with YouTube. And plus, we could get ‘em to up their video resolution at the same time, by using h.264 instead of the old codec.”

According to David Pogue, John Markoff of the New York Times asked Jobs about Flash on the iPhone.  His reponse: “Well, you might see that.”  We’re guessing in the near future since Flash has become so huge on the web.

Steve Jobs announces iPhone third-party support

by Doug Berger on Jun 12, 2007 at 07:00 PM

Yesterday at Steve Jobs’ WWDC keynote, he made it clear that Apple was not going to make the same mistake with the iPhone that other device manufacturers have made with theirs. Manufacturers such as Palm have taken the open source stance on third-party application support, which has really become a complete hands-off approach. Apple on the other hand, is making sure that they can stand behind the security of their product by closing things off more than Palm has.

With the kind of support that Jobs mentioned, the applications will run via Safari - for security reasons - and will be limited in what information they can access from the phone. So the apps will really need to leverage the power of the web using technologies such as AJAX. It will be interesting to see how the apps turn out. Developers… start your engines, and we’ll see you on the 29th.
