Appletell First Look: “Fresh” for Mac OS X
Fresh is a brand new application for OS X that is essentially a file management tool. What it does is take every file that you have interacted with, and shows it in a list. If you edit a Word file, download a file, save an e-mail attachment, take a screenshot, etc., it will show up, newest first, in Fresh’s top green “Recently Created” panel. In everyday computer use, this isn’t much help. But when you’re working on a project, it can be a huge time saver.
Why no WiFi syncing on the iPhone?
There are many features “missing” from the iPhone and iPod touch that we, as users, love to complain about. Some are no-brainers, like copy and paste; others are just wishes. One that not too many people request but would add a great bunch to any WiFi-enabled iPod (I expect there will be more in the future) is WiFi syncing.
Battle of the iTunes controllers
There are tons and tons of iTunes controllers on the market. But taking out all the basic apps, and weeding out the ugly ones, I’ve only found three that really get the job done: SizzlingKeys, Synergy, and CoverSutra. Here I’ll lay out what makes them unique.
Building and maintaining a website cheaply on OS X
Of course, there’s always iWeb for those in need of a quick, presentable website, but let’s be honest: the way iWeb codes and renders things is less than desirable. In the end, pages load slowly due to excess of images, and poor machine-generated code. If you know HTML, it’s always better to code yourself. This article will focus on apps for people who already know HTML.
The Finder is an idiot
Well, okay, maybe that’s a little mean. But, for the core of my Mac experience, that little blue smiley face certainly does some dumb things. On the list: The Path Bar, No “Sticky Move,” Remember the Freaking Size of Windows! The Trash Can. What would you add?
Apple says iPhone jailbreaking is illegal
Apple has decided that it’s not only unsupported, but also illegal, to jailbreak your iPhone. Don’t worry yet, though. As of right now, only Apple supports this notion, so unless they hire iCops with real power to arrest, you’ll be safe with your haxx0red iPhone or iPod touch.
Apple in a “clean-up” phase, preparing for new generation of computing?
I recently wrote an article on Apple’s seeming lack of real innovation in the Mac market. After some consideration, I realized that all of their product lines have been rather stagnant lately: iPhone 3G was a small departure from iPhone design-wise, Macs took on a gray and black finish, and Snow Leopard is supposedly not introducing many new features. This leads me to believe Apple is preparing a new generation of computing.
Practically, iPhoto’s Faces fails
One of iPhoto ‘09’s key features is Faces, which uses face detection and recognition to organize photo albums by face. This may not be the highest on people’s “want” lists for iPhoto ‘09, but it certainly is a cool idea. You want to look at photos of John? Just click on his snapshot on the corkboard. Personally, though, I’m having trouble finding it useful in most practical situations.
iTunes is Apple’s worst consumer product
It’s likely Apple’s most installed piece of software. It’s also buggy, bloated, inconsistent, bloated, slow, bloated, and bloated. It goes by the name of iTunes, and if you own an iPod, or even if you don’t, it’s not to far fetched to assume it’s on your computer right now.
Apple offers survey for recent Apple TV purchasers; listening to consumers for real?
Apple has posted a survey on its website for recent Apple TV purchasers. While it is a pretty standard looking survey, a few questions look like Apple may actually be listening to consumer feedback this time around to make its Apple TV better.
