Apple releases the top 10 applications downloaded at the iTunes Store for 2008

by Arnold Zafra on Dec 3, 2008 at 09:41 AM

iTunes Top 10 Paid AppsWith the close of 2008 inching closer, and with 10,000 applications in its fold, Apple’s iTunes Store has released several lists containing the top 10 applications, both paid and free, in terms of download statistics. Aside from the overall top ten apps, the list also includes the top 10 applications per category based on the iTunes Store’s major categories: games, utilities, entertainment and more.

Interestingly, of the top 10 paid applications overall, six were game apps, three were music/entertainment app and only one paid application is used for business purposes. I don’t know about you, but I think this tell us something about how the iPhone (or iPod Touch) has become more of a gaming phone rather than a smart phone.

Check out a couple lists after the break.

Google Search Results for the iPhone gets a better format

by Arnold Zafra on Nov 12, 2008 at 07:52 AM

Google Search Results Page on the iPhoneThe Official Google Mobile Blog has just announced that the Google search results pages for the iPhone has just been better optimized. Specifically, the enhancement has something to do with the way search results pages were laid out, making full use of the iPhone’s display panel. According to Google, the enhanced search results pages are now formatted more neatly and appropriately for the small screen of the iPhone. So, if you go to google.com using your iPhone’s Safari browser, you’ll noticed you don’t have to scroll side to side anymore.

Additionally, for local search results, useful links such as “Get Directions” and “Click-to-Call” are now displayed on search results pages. Likewise, maps are also displayed for single listing or through the “Show Map” links for multiple listings of establishments. The classic desktop search results format are also available via the “Classic Link” which is located at the bottom of the search results page.

These are certainly nice additions to the functionality of google.com when using your iPhone. Unfortunately for us non-US iPhone users, the said new features won’t be available for some time. As for you, our dear readers in the U.S., the new format of the Google search results pages is already available, and you can see it if your iPhone or iPod Touch has the the 2.x version of the firmware.

Flickr mobile site becomes more iPhone-friendly

by Arnold Zafra on Oct 3, 2008 at 11:00 AM

Flickr mobile for the iPhoneWhile most sites which offer online services are rushing to get into the iPhone hype, the web’s top photo sharing site, Flickr, doesn’t want to join the party yet with a native iPhone app of its own. Instead, Flickr is enhancing its Flickr mobile site to make it more iPhone-friendly. Others who have rushed into making their iPhone apps available in the iTunes apps store have failed to satisfy iPhone users, whereas Flickr’s mobile site has came up with a robust and satisfying Flickr experience on the iPhone.

The redesigned Flickr mobile site has higlighted the most frequently and widely used features of the Flickr website and made it quickly accessible once users visit the mobile site using their iPhone. These features—which are all included in the top-screen navigation—are Activity, Contacts and a Link to more Flickr features. In addition, photos are now automatically scaled to fit the iPhone screen. Unfortunately, when displaying photos, other sizes available are not accessible and viewable. And interestingly, the touch-enabled photo enlargement and shrinking feature cannot be performed with the photos. Scrolling through the photos is now better done, although not as seamless as the web-based Flash enabled Flickr site.

Despite its minor flaws, the iPhone-enhanced Flickr mobile is still a useful alternative for the lack of a native Flickr app. To visit the site, just point your iPhone’s Safari browser to m.flickr.com.

WhosHere app brings a pseudo-MMS functionality to the iPhone

by Arnold Zafra on Sep 23, 2008 at 10:19 AM

WhosHere iPhone AppmyRete, creator and developer of the proximity networking app for the iPhone called WhosHere, has just added a new feature to the application, and it is actually something which we all have been wanting: MMS sending capability. Although the feature is not really outright MMS functionality, it does the job, and does it pretty well. WhosHere, which is currently in beta version .098, allows you to send up to 10 images a day to any iPhone or iPod Touch users OTA for free.

But the image sending capability is just an added feature of WhosHere. More importantly, it is a social proximity application for meeting friends or potential dates. When you upload and install the free app into your iPhone, you will answer six questions about yourself and who you are interested in meeting. The app will then show matches who are near your location. Right there and then, you can send unlimited free text messages to those people within the WhosHere app. And, of course, what happens next is up to you.

Other features of WhosHere let you remove profiles from your Chats history screen, time stamp text and picture messages, offer support for hundreds of international characters and provide faster loading of profiles and pictures.

Flutter for the iPhone 3GIf you’ve been missing the MMS feature of your previous mobile phone since you’ve shifted to the iPhone 3G, and you got frustrated when Apple forgot to include this feature in the recent 2.1 software upgrade, then you have a reason to rejoice. JuiceCaster, which is more popularly known for its mobile social networking platform, is bringing the picture messaging feature to the iPhone via its new app, called Flutter.

Basically, Flutter lets you send free, unlimited picture messages, and even geo-tagged location of the pictures, to any mobile phone in the world at no extra cost to you except for the cost of an SMS message. The SMS message will contain the link to where your picture message was stored in JuiceCaster’s site. From the JuiceCaster hosting site, your recipient can then view the picture message using their iPhones or any other mobile phones.

TomCruise.com gets an iPhone version

by Arnold Zafra on Sep 8, 2008 at 12:20 PM

TomCruise.com iPhone versionAccording to Google Trends, Compete.com and Quantcast.com, actor Tom Cruise’s official website is the most visited official male star movie site on the web. This might have prompted whoever is responsible for his website to come up with an iPhone-enhanced version of TomCruise.com. If there are Tom Cruise’s fans reading Appletell right now, you might be glad to find out that your favorite actor’s website has launched its official mobile version specifically geared for iPhone users.

There’s nothing special about the iPhone-optimized Tom Cruise website, except for an all-exclusive and celebratory retrospective film career video clip from Tom Cruise’s previous movies—spanning 27 years of his Hollywood career. These include films such as Taps, Risky Business, Collateral, Mission Impossible, Minority Report and others.

Noreve’s diamond leather case is more expensive than your iPhone 3G

by Arnold Zafra on Aug 11, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Noreve iPhone leathercaseIf you love your iPhone 3G so much that you are willing to spend more to get a cool-looking leather case than what you paid for the unit itself, then Noreve’s iPhone leather case might be your thing. Thanks to diamond ornaments embedded on an expensive leather material, the Noreve will set you back no more than $15K a piece.

What makes this leather case ultra-expensive are its 6.8K diamonds between 18 to 22 points of VS1 quality and G color. With such an expensive leather case, you would expect it to fully accomadate all of the iPhone’s stock form. Unfortunately this leather case just lets you slip your iPhone inside the case. This leather case is available in 15 different colors, and is said to feature 272 pieces of diamonds. The case does not come with a belt clip, but at this price, who would want to slip it onto a belt, anyway?

So, does your iPhone deserve an expensive case such as this one from Novere?

iPhone 3G to cost $1000 plus in the Philippines

by Arnold Zafra on Aug 7, 2008 at 09:45 AM

Globe TelecomAs soon as it was announced that the iPhone 3G is coming over to some other countries on Aug. 22, a local mobile distributor in the Philippines, Globe Telecom, put up its official product site. It was pretty exciting to learn that we Filipino Apple fans are finally getting the iPhone in a legit way, having been skipped during last year’s first generation iPhone launch. Unfortunately, Filipinos will have to pay too much to get themselves an iPhone unit as soon as it comes out. How much? A whooping $1,000 plus for the plan-free 16GB iPhone unit. That amount was computed based on a US dollar-Philippine peso exchange rate of $1=P44.3.

Details after the break.
