SheepShaver allows users to run Mac OS Classic under Snow Leopard
Leading up to the release of Mac OS X back in 2001, many users were worried about compatibility with Mac OS 9 and below. Mac OS X was completely different from its predecessors, and only some Mac OS 9 applications that were “Carbonized” would run natively in Mac OS X. For those who have legacy applications that need to be used, there are two possible solutions: buy an old Mac or try SheepShaver.
RipDev leaves the iPhone “jailbroken community”
If you’ve been following iPhone jailbreaking and related information for a while now you’re probably familiar with the company. There is no doubt they have brought the jailbreak community many great things, from Installer to Kate to the more recent Icy. Sadly, RipDev will be leaving the iPhone community for reasons that they do not wish to disclose.
Apple discontinues ZFS project for Mac OS X
Apple has posted a notice on its ZFS open-source project page indicating that the project has been terminated. ZFS is an advanced file system developed by Sun that had been ported to Mac OS X and released in 2007 as an open-source project on Apple’s Mac OS Forge collaboration site. ZFS had been rumored to become the default file system for Mac OS X Leopard, but ended up appearing with only limited read-only capabilities.
NASA launches iPhone app
Although I don’t really see this being a very useful app on my iPhone, and to most others, I am sure there are some out there who could get a lot of use out of NASA’s new iPhone app. It was developed by the New Media Team at NASA Ames Research Center and is full of features. For anyone who is interested in NASA’s space missions and other related information, this is definitely an app to check out, especially since it’s free of charge.
AT&T announces a record 3.2 million iPhones activated in third quarter
AT&T has released its earnings report for the third quarter of 2009, and among the information was the fact that 3.2 million iPhones have been activated throughout the quarter, the highest quarterly total in history. The new record tops the 2.4 million iPhones that were activated in the third quarter of 2008, after the release of the iPhone 3G. Among noteable information within the earnings report, iPhones accounted for an incredible 74% of total AT&T postpaid activations of “integrated devices” that have either a physical or virtual keyboard in addition to voice capabilities.
Rock Band for iPhone OS is a great success
Well, I can’t say I didn’t see this coming. Rock Band for the iPhone OS by EA Games has hit the App Store’s Top 10 and conquered the Top Grossing list in the U.S. just a few days after its release this week. One could argue that this has happened to many App Store apps in the past, so what makes Rock Band so special? For one thing, the game sold for $9.99 with none of the free versions, trials, pricing sales or schemes that have been plaguing the App Store for quite some time now.
Is built-in Blu-ray support next for Apple?
As most of you are probably aware, Apple very recently upgraded its line of iMacs, Macbooks, Mac Minis, and introduced its new Magic Mouse. However, certain details Apple has released at the same time seem to have gone mostly unnoticed. One of those details was Apple’s change of the new iMac’s display ratio to 16:9, which would allow the iMacs to play video in 1080p (high definition), hinting at possible Blu-Ray support in the near future.
Magic Mouse user guide suggests Mac OS X 10.6.2 to be released soon
Several people have noticed and pointed out that Apple’s user guide for its new Magic Mouse makes a reference to the not-yet-released Mac OS X v10.6.2. The mention of OS X 10.6.2 suggests that Apple plans or at least did plan for the update to be released to consumers around the product launch.
Apple exploring implementing ads into Mac OS X?
In an oddly unusual patent application Apple filed back in 2008, the company seemingly explores the possibility of integrating advertisements into its Mac OS X (or possibly even a new and unreleased) operating system. The graphics that have been provided even show how Apple might implement it into OS X. In exchange for viewing the advertisements, the user would receive some goods or service for free or at a discounted price.
TomTom car kit briefly appears in Apple’s online store, but not yet shipping
The long-awaited TomTom car kit for the iPhone has finally shown up on the online Apple store, although the page is now currently offline. The hardware unit alone sells for $119.95, and the app is an additional $50-$100 depending upon where you’re located. The cradle was made to enhance the TomTom GPS app, which has been available in the App Store since July of this year.
