Apple to “vigorously” defend itself in its lawsuit with Nokia
In the 10-K annual report (PDF) Apple filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (posted yesterday), the company made note that it plans to “vigorously” defend itself in a lawsuit that Nokia filed last week. The lawsuit claimed Apple had infringed multiple cellular and Wi-Fi patents in their iPhone, which Nokia apparently owned.
Apple’s Magic Mouse now shipping
People have started receiving shipping notices from Apple stating that their Magic Mouse orders have been shipped. When the Magic Mouse was introduced, Apple stated it would be bundled with the new iMac models and would not be available for standalone purchase until the end of October. These new shipping notices show that Apple is likely meeting this goal even though the Magic Mouse has yet to make its appearance in Apple retail stores.
Google Reader makes its way to the Mac desktop with Gruml
Gruml has been around for a while now, but its first beta was extremely glitchy; too much to make it a very interesting and useful application. However, more recent beta releases have made Gruml a much more stable application. To be specific, an impressive RSS reader that relies on Google Reader for functionality.
GrandPerspective for Mac graphically illustrates disk usage
Recently, I’ve come across a very cool and useful Mac application known as GrandPerspective, a utility that scans a chosen area of your hard drive and outputs an illustration of how your hard drive space is being used. This can be particularly useful if you’re running low on disk space or have large unused and/or unwanted files hidden away that are taking up a lot of your free space.

NASDAQ launches impressive iPhone app
The National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (a.k.a. NASDAQ) has surprised many with its new, free official iPhone app. The app, titled NASDAQ Portfolio Manager, allows users to look up various stocks and get access to data in real-time when the market is open. The main app screen features all the stock information that you’d expect, but when you rotate your iPhone into landscape view, you’ll be treated to a full chart with a variety of different viewing options.
First iPhone firewall soon to be in Cydia
A new iPhone development project has recently surfaced and begun to gain public interest as it is the first ever firewall for the iPhone and iPod touch. This firewall alerts users whenever an application requires use of the App Store (even if it is hidden), access to the internet, and access to personal and private data (such as your contacts, device’s UDID number, etc.).
Unreleased MacBook Pro 6,1 and 6,2 referenced in Mac OS X 10.6.2
Support files for unreleased MacBook Pro computers have been discovered in the latest devloper build (10C531) of Mac OS X 10.6.2. The new build was seeded to developers just a few days ago, and includes a few references to the unreleased 6,1 and 6,2 MacBook Pro models. The latest available MacBook Pros carry a 5,x model number, and were last updated in June. No rumors of MacBook Pro refreshes have surfaced recently, although previous reports have suggested that Core i7-based processors could be integrated into MacBook Pros by late 2009 to early 2010.
App it Up: Ping!
Ping! is an iDevice to iDevice messaging application (similar to BlackBerry Messenger on Blackberry smartphones) that makes use of Apple’s Push Notification service, and is said to be a replacement for SMS or other IM clients. Ping! uses data from a 3G/EDGE or WiFi connection rather than SMS messages, and therefore can potentially save users a lot of money.
App it Up: MyPlaylists
MyPlaylists is a very simple, yet very useful utility that allows you to create music playlists right on your iPhone or iPod touch, without the need of a computer. The app also includes an iPod-like interface for listening to your created playlists, and management of the playlists with an interface which is quite similar to that of creating/editing On The Go playlists within the iPod app.
