¿Que? Mexico to get iPhone in June?

There are some rumors currently flying around that Telcel Mexico has signed a deal with Apple to carry the iPhone in Mexico. Telcel is the largest mobile provider in Mexico, making up over 70% of the market. It would only make sense for Apple to go with them, but so soon?
The reported date for release would be sometime this June, when its suspected the “iPhone 2.0” will be launched with the AppStore and possible 3G capability. Now, the question is whether Mexico will get the original iPhone, or the new iPhone 2. We will have to wait it out and see if an announcement comes, but for now this means very little.
C’mon Apple, still waiting up here in Canada…
Today’s Question: Do you have the iPhone in your country/location currently?

iPhone cracked to the core, tool coming next week
It looks like the iPhone Dev Team has done it again, but this time taking it to whole new levels. Previous releases from the iPhone Dev Team have helped you Jailbreak your iPhone and get it working on pretty much any GSM carrier, but this new tool named ‘Pwnage’ will allow you to get to the core of your iPhone.
So, what do we mean by core? We mean you are able to get below the current OS and install another OS on the device (when/if one gets coded). This functionality opens up the iPhone to a whole new level of hacks and hopefully some very cool new uses for the device.
The Pwnage Tool kit was supposed to be released yesterday, but the Dev Team would like to make a few more changes with the GUI and also release both a Mac OS and Windows version of the software, so you can expect a release in the next week or so.
RelatedEasy OS X Productivity Tips
Rob Griffiths over at Macworld.com has put together an article and video outlining some great tips and tricks for being slightly more productive in OS X. These tips include some basic QuickTime and Quicklook video functions, Printing selected pages in Preview, and even some more ‘hardcore’ Terminal commands to help with Time Machine.
The three tips that I found the most useful have to be the ability to turn off the Time Machine nags about which disk you prefer to backup to - especially a problem if you have multiple drives connected to your Mac. It can easily be shut off using the following command typed into Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.TimeMachine DoNotOfferNewDisksForBackup -bool YES
The second is actually not an OS X-specific tip, but definitely a useful one. It is a bookmarklet that you can keep in your bookmarks folder that lets you do site-specific Google searches while on a page. It’s very easy to get set up and extremely useful. Drag me into your bookmark bar (don’t click on the link, add it to your bookmarks), or save the following code in the address field of a bookmark:
javascript:Qr=prompt(‘Search%20Site%20for’,’‘);if(Qr)location.href=‘http://www.google.com/search?&q=site:’+encodeURIComponent(window.location.hostname)+’+’+escape(Qr)
The third is the ability to go from Terminal to Finder or Finder to Terminal very easily while keeping the structure you were in. i.e. If you are in Finder and in the Applications folder, you can run this app and will end up in the Terminal in the Applications directory - ready to run a command. To do so you will need to create a script, in AppleScript, using the following code:
tell application “Finder”
set myWin to window 1
set theWin to (quoted form of POSIX path of (target of myWin as alias))
tell application “Terminal”
activate
tell window 1
do script “cd ” & theWin
end tell
end tell
end tell

RelatedMake viewing downloads faster with Quick Look

Props to Mac OS X Hints for a great tip that allows you to preview all of your downloads automatically using Quick Look. This can all be accomplished with just two simple steps and a couple minutes of your time.
All you need to do is download and install the Quick Look Droplet. Upon installing it go into the settings for your browser of choice and change the browser preference for automatically opening files types (mp3s, PDFs, Word docs, etc.) to open with the Quick Look Droplet rather than Preview, Quicktime, etc. Changing from opening in regular apps to opening with Quick Look helps speed up things, especially with PDFs and Word documents.
Download the Quick Look Droplet here.

Related.Mac service for PCs a possibility?
![]()
Lately Apple has been pushing their windows products, more specifically Safari, and this has got us thinking what the next move may be. Kevin from jkOnTheRun thinks he may know what Apple has up their sleeves and it makes sense, .Mac for the PC.
In this new age we use multiple machines and multiple operating systems. Apple has made major breakthroughs with file sharing and usability between Macs and PCs, but there is still a gap when it comes to syncing up these machines. A new version of .Mac, possibly a “.Mac lite,” could definitely be in the works from Apple for integrating and syncing between your Mac, PC, and maybe even your iPhone.
On the Windows front there are options including Windows Live SkyDrive, a free service with half the space of .Mac. If Apple could launch this service so current .Mac users get a free upgrade or the features for a small fee, Apple could have a hit. Of course, all of this is speculation - we’re basically writing your business plan Apple, no excuses, get to it!
Check out the full post here as it goes into much more detail.

RelatedSony thinking about iPod-ready subscription music
![]()
Sony label chief Rolf Schmidt-Holtz was recently interviewed and mentioned the possibility of Sony creating a new music subscription program. The way Sony is looking at this is very interesting, and could very easily compete with Apple’s iTunes Store if they gained support from major labels and could make the system easy to use.
“We have many ideas. For example, a subscription offering in the digital music distribution, in which we currently operate. In the simplest, and perhaps the most attractive alternative would be a kind of music flat rate for all MP3 players, including the iPod, for a monthly contribution is available from the entire music world.”
[Google Translated]
A major problem with subscriptions is that once you stop paying, your music is gone. Sony has even thought about this and may give you 40-50 songs each year to keep, just for being subscribed. When asked about pricing, the Sony label rep explained it would be in the range of 6 to 8 Euros ($9-12) a month, roughly the price of a CD here in the states.
If Sony can pull this off it would definitely cause an upset to Apple, possibly pushing Apple to create a subscription system of their own, already being rumored.
Do you like to buy your music, or would you rather use a subscription based service?

RelatedSometimes Apple stuff doesn’t ‘just work’

Okay, so maybe you’ve never had a problem with an Apple product but I know that I’ve had many issues and so has Xavier from Notebooks.com. Xavier has dealt with dead iMacs, dead batteries, and countless iPhone issues. It seems he isn’t cut out to be an Apple product user.
Apple is like any other company out there and is far from perfect, even though a lot of die-hard fanboys/girls will say otherwise. I think a lot of people are lying to themselves when it comes to Apple products, saying a product ‘just works’ isn’t true, saying it never crashes is yet another lie. Sure, there will be the exception where someone will have absolutely no issues, but overall, every product is flawed in some way (sometimes they even blow up).
I have dealt with dead iPods a few months after buying them, and an Airport Extreme that refuses to work when I need it most. But we’re interested to hear your experiences, what Apple products have you had fail on you?

Yes, you heard right. A good friend of mine, and part time contributor to Appletell, James Bayliss, is the latest victim of an exploding laptop. James wasn’t hurt or anything other than a small burn on his hand, but both his MacBook Pro and desk have seen better days.
James was sitting at his desk yesterday, reading Digg, when all of a sudden he heard a loud “POP”. Immediately after this pop, sparks and flames started shooting out from his MacBook Pro, lighting his desk on fire and giving him a slight burn as he tried to put out the flames. He finally got the fire out, unplugged his MacBook Pro and pulled out the battery and gave Apple Europe a call.
iTunes now #2 in US music sales market

In all the excitement of yesterday’s news we almost forgot to report on a huge feat for Apple. According to a new study from the NPD Group, iTunes is the second largest music retailer in the US, right behind Wal-Mart. During the last year, many more people moved to online services to acquire their music, and this is definitely working in Apple’s favor, but there is a catch. Sales to the younger audience are starting to drop slightly so its clear Apple needs to start marketing towards the older folk.
In the past 2 years the amount of legally purchased music has dropped 6%, from 48% in 2006 to just 42% in 2007. This decline is attributed to music piracy in the younger generations and the fact that over 19% of American internet users participated in some form of peer-to-peer sharing, most of which was used for sharing copyright music. The news of lower CD sales is easily attributed to the digital world we are now living in and companies need to learn to adapt better. Apple is currently the best online music retailer out there, but even they have to change their game up in the following years if they want to succeed in the long term.

RelatedApple cancels NAB appearance, nothing new this year
![]()
Okay, so the title I put out there may not be exactly true, but what is true is that TVTechnology.com has received confirmation that Apple will not have a booth at NAB this year. NAB, the National Association of Broadcasters show, is a show packed full of video-related product releases and goodies. Last year Apple announced Final Cut Server (yet to be released), and dropped a new version of Final Cut Studio for all the hardcore video editors out there.
The actual release of Final Cut Server has been pushed off for quite awhile now and was said to be released sometime in early 2008. It seems Apple will be pushing it off further or just releasing the software on their own, outside of NAB. We should see some updates or news in the following weeks and months, but won’t know for sure until Apple sets the product to ship.
