Jonny Ive awarded with “Great Briton” award
Leading global financial services firm Morgan Stanley has once again chosen its Great Britons of the year, and guess what? Apple’s very own Jonathan Ive managed to beat his two other contenders in the Creative Industry category to claim victory. The award was open to nominations, and thereafter shortlisted to three individuals per category. A final judging panel was then entrusted with the task of choosing the winners; they labelled him as a “rock star in the technology world”.
Ive was up against Michael Boyd and Stephen Fry, the Royal Shakespeare Company artistic director and renowned English actor respectively. He was also awarded the 2007 National Design Award last year (in the area of product design) for the design of the iPhone. Despite being Apple’s senior vice president for industrial design, the man is always humble when interviewed; he attributes the success of any product to teamwork and the individual members.
RelatedMacBook Pro to be updated on February 12th?
HardMac, the English translation of MacBidouille believes that Apple will be announcing new products on February 12th. HardMac says the delay (approximately 2 weeks after MacWorld 2008) was to maintain the buzz surrounding products like MacBook Air and Apple TV. Their sources also claim that the new product will be a revised MacBook Pro. This could be similar to the Mac Pro’s announcement, which was announced days before MacWorld 2008, possibly to maintain the buzz as well.
However, it must be said that HardMac’s sources of information are sometimes unreliable; for example, the news site predicted that Mac OS X 10.5.2 would arrive at MacWorld 2008, but no such update was ever announced during the conference. That being said, previous rumors have pointed to a major announcement in the next few weeks or so, and 12th February is also a Tuesday (in keeping with Apple’s tradition, the day that major product announcements are made). We’ll keep tabs on this.

RelatedWhat’s the deal with leaked keynotes?

OK, let me explain. So, before any major Apple event, amid all the rumors and speculation of yet-to-be-announced products, there will (inevitably) be several links to so-called “leaked” keynotes. These are usually key pointers for Steve, so that he remembers what to say next. Every one of these leaked keynotes always proclaims that it is “the one”, or that it is accurate, or that it was somehow snuck out of Cupertino.
As far as I know, none of these leaked keynotes have ever been accurate. So then, who makes these things up? Bored fanboys, or website owners desperate for some more traffic? Whoever it is, let me tell you something. You’re spoiling the fun and suspense for all the Mac users out there. There are lots of people who don’t want the surprise to be ruined, bokay? And even if you want to make one up, please put some effort in. Mentioning “Mac Pro Update” in the keynote is just dumb, considering that they were updated last week.
Gosh.

RelatedFull MacHeist 2 bundle now available

Finally, after selling 5000 bundles, and then reaching $100,000 in donations to charity, the entire MacHeist bundle has finally been unlocked. This means that future buyers and people who have already paid for it will now get the three best apps: CSSEdit, Snapz Pro X and Pixelmator. In addition to the initial 10 apps that were announced, Speed Download was also added to the bundle, as the 11th app. There is still an empty spot on the MacHeist homepage, so there could be possibly be another secret app waiting to be revealed.
If you can successfully get a friend of yours to purchase a bundle, you will also receive LaunchBar, a Spotlight-like app that helps improve your productivity. With just another 9 days left to make up your mind, and such good value plus the option to donate to charity, this is turning out to be a no-brainer. So what are you waiting for? Get your bundle for just $49 today.

RelatedApple.com generating more buzz for tomorrow’s keynote?

Should you happen to land at Apple.com, you’ll find the same “There’s something in the air” banners that are currently hanging at the Moscone Center. Earlier last year, Apple used this same method at Macworld 2007 for launching the iPhone, so I’m guessing we could be seeing another product of equal brilliance. Another interesting point to note is the usage of a new font; well, at least a variant of an old font, Myriad Pro Light. Does this have anything to do with the yet-to-be announced products?
Fortunately however, the banner also states that Steve’s keynote would be broadcasted on Tuesday afternoon on Apple.com, which follows the tradition of the past few years. The QuickTime stream is usually available several hours after the keynote ends; look under the QuickTime section of Apple.com.

RelatedFinal Cut geeks and filmmakers unite!
You’ve heard about Web 2.0 and anime conferences; now there’s one for Final Cut users and filmmakers alike. In fact it’s considered to be the biggest of its kind. Held at MacWorld Expo for the seventh time, the event will take place at 5pm on the 16th of January. Interested participants should head to the Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco. And you should be interested too, because there will be presentations from several filmmakers as well as Final Cut-related products from 22 different retailers.
However, that’s not all. According to AppleInsider, Apple is supposedly going to announce “something super secret” at the event. While it’s hard to lay a finger as to what this “super secret” thing is, I doubt it will be an update to the Final Cut Studio suite, seeing that it was only refreshed last April. However, Apple has historically used such events to talk about its “Pro” lineup, which includes the MacBook Pro, Mac Pro and the XServe.
Admission is $10 per head.

RelatedGoogle to boost GMail storage
GMail seems to be one of the most popular email services available today, whether you use it on the iPhone or not. Unfortunately, a select number of users seem to be consuming a lot of storage space, especially for storing attachments like PDF documents and pictures.
In a blog post on the Official GMail Blog, Google Engineer Rob Siemborski says that “a few (users) are using Gmail so much that (they’re) running out of space, so to make good on our promise, today we’re announcing we are speeding up our counter and giving out more free storage”. GMail currently offers 2.9GB of storage, although you can increase that by paying for more. In contrast, both Hotmail and Yahoo offer 5GB and “unlimited storage”, respectively.

RelatedMr Digg broke his iPhone

Oops. Kevin Rose, the founder and chief software architect at Digg has apparently dropped his precious JesusPhone. In a posting on his Pownce account, the co-founder has an image of himself and his (severely) cracked and ruined iPhone.
Ouch, that look on his face says it all. What’s more interesting is that there seems to be some masking tape on the top left hand corner of his iPhone, which could indicate that the gadget was dropped prior to this.
Hmm, wonder whether he still qualifies for his $100 store credit.

RelatediPod Touch shipped without Mac OS X

What’s an iPod without Mac OS X? This one. It turns out that several folks have received their iPod Touches without the operating system installed. When the iPod starts up, a simple diagnostic utility is displayed showing vital functions like speaker, touch, accelerometer, ambient light, buttons and what’s this? Bluetooth!?
This sounds a lot like a little first-batch stuff up. Still, it’s interesting to note that Bluetooth hardware might actually be embedded into the iPod Touch, which could perhaps be unlocked in a future software update. Oh and did you notice the cereal box for the cereal serial number? Teehee.

RelatedBuy an iPhone, get 30 day trial of one-to-one

If that $200 price drop still isn’t going to motivate you to purchase an iPhone, this might. Every purchase of said phone now entitles the buyer to a free 30-day trial of Apple’s One to One personal training service, which usually retails at a yearly fee of $99.
The trial limits you to one 50-minute training session each week. Check out Apple’s iPhone web page on getting the most out of your new iPhone, including in-store workshops, one to one training and the iconic Genius Bar.
