iPhone 2 at Macworld?
As Steve Jobs has already confirmed that work is underway on the iPhone2 that isn’t a surprise but if SmartOffice are to be believed then we may see it as soon as January 2008 at Macworld Expo, which would be a surprise.
Rumored improvements include:
- GPS
- expanded WiFi capability
- he ability to sync with email servers
The report claims that the discussions that Apple are having with manufacturing partners in Asia are likely to result in “major software and hardware changes to cater for non-US markets such as Europe, Asia and Australia.”

RelatediGlasses goes 2.0

If you use iChat, and really who doesn’t on a Mac? You should check out the latest 2.0 version of iGlasses. Designed to work with the iSight for both talking and video it has a “a whole kit bag of adjustments, colorizations, exposure controls and pan/zoom options.”
$9.95 or a free upgrade to existing users, it is particularly good in my experience for adjusting the brightness and having a bit of fun. And if you have a low resolution screen, or odd colors, the black & white setting sharpens things up very nicely.

RelatedHardware iPhone unlocking method; Won’t void your warranty, If you are careful

Personally I wouldn’t attempt this, but then again I have very little interest in an iPhone, and what interest I do have can wait until they actually bring out one worth having. Still if you live in an area that doesn’t have AT&T, or you just plain hate them but must have an iPhone, then you will probably know all about the hardware hack anyway.
The good news? Well the method from the Israeli hackers doesn’t require soldering and if you are careful opening your iPhone, you won’t void the warranty - or so they say. It´‘s totally up to you - personally I don’t really see how it can’t.
“The only thing you will need to perform this hardware unlocking hack is a couple of metal pins, cork and a piece of cable. The procedure in the web page is straightforward enough for anyone with enough patience to follow it.”

RelatedPure Networks launches ‘Network Magic for Mac’

To show my age , “in my day” networks were somewhat mythical things, that only large companies used, and the techies that ran them were somewhat god like (in their own minds anyway). 20 years on and it seems that every small office and a significant number of homes have them. Heck I even have on myself.
That is why I was interested to see that Pure Networks has announced Network Magic for Mac “to offer new capability for households and small businesses that use both PC and Mac computers on their home or small office networks”. That’s me, Mac’s and Windows PC on the same network! The attraction of Network Magic?
The new add-on makes it easy to view all networked computers from one of your PCs, and makes tasks such as sharing files simply work.
“More and more people have both Macs and PCs in their homes or small offices, and they want to be able to easily access files from any computer on their home network,” said Jeff Erwin, Pure Networks CEO. “With Network Magic for Mac, file sharing just works.”

RelatediPhoto 08 features overview, from blogger Glenn Wolsey

If you haven’t already seen the new features in iPhoto 08 in action then take a look at this brief but useful video from Glenn Wolsey. Events looks particularly useful, and the way in which you can quickly see how adjustments would effect your photograph is very cool.
While you are there check out his other stuff, and I am sure that we will see more on iLife 08 from Glenn soon. Glenn Wolsey is a very popular Apple blogger who has been around for a little while now, this jump to video is definitely interesting as we value his opinions as he has some good ones.
Updated: Glenn has also added a video on iWeb.

Related10 Best iPhone Apps

A case of creativity and ingenuity, on the basis that Apple seem intent on making it remarkably difficult for developers regards iPhone applications, this list gives you a number of ways to play games, access content or IM your friends.
- Running Native Apps
- Jive Talk
- Glide Mobile
- iPhoneDrive
- Videora iPhone Converter
- Diamenty
- MacMost Sudoku
- Seeqpod
- Signal
- Addfone
Looks interesting but to call the iPhone the ‘worlds smallest Mac’ seems somewhat premature and overstated to say the least. Respect to the developers for cracking the code required to develop native applications and for their ingenuity with what they are achieving with Web applications BUT come on Apple, let’s see the full potential of the iPhone - let these guys have a real go at developing for it!

RelatedMake the most of the limited capacity on the iPhone
One of my biggest ‘issues’ with the iPhone is the limited disc space. 8GB just isn’t enough to get me remotely interested in one. If I had one though I would be looking at Blade Runner as a means of squeezing every last MB out it to.
Although it wont work with the DRM videos purchased through the iTunes store it will work with video you encode with applications such as Handbrake, Visual Hub etc and can be set to a number of options: 100, 200 and 350 Kbps and 480 pixels width, with varying levels of quality as you would expect. Is it worth it?
Well even at 100Kbps the claims are that the video is watch-able so “as the movie encoded at 1500 Kbps and full resolution weighs in around 1.5GB, but using these newer settings knocks the file down to around 190 MB (for the 100 Kbps file), 300 and 400 MB, respectively. That means you could easily fit anywhere from three or four movies (at the highest quality 350 Kbps setting) to as many as six movies (at the lowest 100 Kbps setting) in the same space as the original high-quality version.”

RelatedFollower or Leader? Audi vs iMac design

Now if the inspiration for the iMac is the Audi, check out the windscreen on the Audi, that would make an awesome screen size for the next iMac!
Years ago it seemed to me that all car designs started to merge into one as they all went through the wind tunnel design process, so are we about to see the same with the technology? In fact are we not already seeing large similarities already - minimalist, brushed aluminum, ‘form mixed with function’.
I am now waiting for the hacks to install an iMac into the Audi.

RelatedMediaTemple pioneers iPhone Account Center

If you are hosted by Media Temple. If you have an iPhone. If your server is down and it is crucial that you get it back up and running then the new hosting control panel for iPhone from Media Temple will push all your buttons. The Media Temple account center panel is now accessible via your iPhone with a very sexy UI, allowing you to check on your server while you’re on the go.
Other functions include submitting a support ticket or buying that ‘must have’ domain name. That’s it really, some nice pictures and another innovative development from Media Temple.

Well now you are spoilt for choice, but if you are in the Boot Camp camp then the 1.4 beta will be of interest to you. Free and in beta it comes with the usual ‘warnings’ and according to Apple, but offers:
- Support for the MacBook Pro’s backlight keyboard
- Apple Remote Pairing
- Updated graphics drivers (Windows loves drivers)
- Improved Boot Camp driver install, improved international keyboard support
