iPhone OS 3.0: Nice-to-Knows
The long-awaited iPhone OS 3.0 is finally here. While it is certainly less momentous than the launch of the original iPhone, it is still a solid OS upgrade in terms of performance and additional features. Assuming you’ve upgraded succesfully, you will soon notice a few minor enhancements that, while not bullet-pointed in a Keynote, certainly raise the bar in terms of usability. Here are a few that have been discovered in just a couple hours of testing.
Browser Wars: Replay of the Megahertz Myth?
There was an interesting article over at TG Daily recently, titled, “Browser wars: When will the madness end?” As you can likely guess from the title, the author assumes that the cage match currently underway between Safari, Google’s Chrome, Firefox, and IE is a bad thing. But aren’t we taught that competition is a good thing? In this case, competition is goodvital, even, if the Internet is to keep growing.
iPhone 3GS pricing - get over it already!
Okay, okay, we get it. The worldat least those that like the iPhoneis in turmoil. AT&T is saying that current iPhone 3G users won’t get any special discounts to upgrade their current phones to the new iPhone 3GS. Let the chaos and destruction begin, right? Well, not exactly. The furor on Twitter is, quite frankly, obscene. AT&T and Apple are perfectly right to charge an early upgrade fee, and here’s why it makes sense…
Why the hubbub about Prē syncing with iTunes?
Many bloggers have weighed in regarding Palm’s announcement that the Pre will be supported as though it were a native device in iTunes: “Palm media sync is a feature of webOS that synchronizes seamlessly with iTunes, giving you a simple and easy way to transfer DRM-free music, photos and videos to your Palm Pre.” Included in that statement are two key points: 1) The device somehow mimics an iPod (anybody think Apple is happy about that?), and 2) DRM-free. Let’s take a look at both of these, and see if they stand up…
Apple’s Grand Central: Exactly what consumers need!
Neil McAllister over at Developer World posted an interesting article regarding Apple’s forthcoming Grand Central technology. It is a great article (a little dense if you are not a hardcore techie), but I wonder if his conclusions are necessarily right.
Appletell reviews Myst for iPhone and iPod touch
Anybody who remembers the days of the Macintosh clones, Motorola 86xx processors, or the dreaded Performa will likely remember playing Myst when it first came out. And what a great memory; Myst was one of the first games that truly showcased the power of then-new CD-ROM technology. By packing in stunning visual graphics, an immersive soundtrack, and video footage, an entire world came alive in vibrant detail. And just imagine if you could actually touch that world…oh, wait! Now you can!
Improve graphic performance of your Intel GMA chipset Macintosh
Jealous of friends who have a newer MacBook or iMac with the new NVIDIA graphics? Do you feel less able by comparison, what with that sad old Intel GMA chipset sported by your earlier model? Never fear, there’s hope for you yet! Enter GMABoosterX, a new tool that allows you to up the clock speed on the Intel GMA (Graphics Media Accelerator) graphics chip included in your Mac Mini, MacBook, or iMac, resulting in faster graphics performance.
A suggestion for the Apple TV
Apple’s billion-apps-sold countdown has gotten me thinking; why can’t I run some of my apps on my Apple TV? Why am I limited to a 3 inch screen for playing fun games? What about Pandora and my NPR Public Radio tuner? Those would sound great on my home theater system, so why is it stuck on my iPhone? The AppleTV has languished a bit, but it has star potential as a central conduit for digital media and apps!
iPod shuffle 3G: A suggestion for Apple
First off, the good. It’s incredibly coolso futuristic, it does not have a single button. We get it. And most of us, grumbling aside, would love to run out and buy one. But coolness aside, there is a larger question arising from Apple’s refresh to the iPod Shuffle line: how do we connect it to other stuff? Cars, speakers, TV…anything that accepts a line-in connection can play music from an iPod. But what do we do with this new Shuffle?
Safari 4 beta for Windows: First impressions
I have been using the Safari 4 beta for a little over 24 hours now on both Windows XP/Vista and OS X Tiger/Leopard. Apart from the slight learning curve (where’d my Tab bar go?!), I have to say, I love the OS X version. The Windows side of things is, decidedly, a mixed bag. Apple appears to have answered several major criticisms, though I’m not sure this is entirely a good thing.
