Macintosh/iPhone software update round-up - October 10, 2008
Macintosh and iPhone software updates and announcements for October 10, 2008:
- EyeTV has been updated to v3.0.4. So, domo arigato, Mr. Elgato.
- Steinberg Media’s Cubase Essential 4 Personal Music Production System has a long, haughty name.
- Battle the mighty Aquafadas! And use their video software if you’ve still got an MPEG-2 or AVCHD camcorder.
- You’re at a party, a beautiful woman approaches you, and she asks you to compare two SQLite databases with drag and drop simplicity. Will you be ready, or will you go home alone? Again.
- I wonder if the servers for the BreakThru online radio for iPhone/iPod touch are all on a train racing across the countryside. And that Queen reference is dedicated to all my British readers, who comprise 8% of our audience.
- iWebTemplate releases new RapidWeaver template, doesn’t change their company name to Sometimes iWebTemplate.
- You can now practice numerology on the iPhone and iPod touch. I just hope you can still get a solid 3G connection when you’re spending eternity in hell!
- Arten Science don’t mix. Get it? Arten Science? Art and Science? Ah, forget it. Just check out their screen recording software and leave me alone.
Video of Aluminum MacBook? Probably not.
While this video may indeed provide an idea of what the new MacBook will look like, it is most definitely an attempt to drum up traffic. The video depicts a MacBook Air with a piece of paper covering the keyboard and a chunk taken out of the front; whether this was done in post production or is actually missing is unclear. The biggest giveaway here is the bottom of the MacBook Air lying upside down next to it.
The camerawork is typically unrevealing, staying in close, and focusing and unfocusing quickly. Were the camera to pan back, it would become even clearer that the “MacBook” is simply a MacBook Air with the “Air” disguised in post production.

Steve Jobs introduces the Mac
Here’s a wonderful bit of nostalgia: Steve Jobs (wearing a tux!) introducing the original Mac in 1984. Boasting a 68000 processor that “eats 8088s for breakfast” and two serial ports, the original Mac also had a 3-1/4” disc drive, all for the low, low price of $2,495.
What’s really fun is hearing Steve boast about the graphics of the 9” screen, which really was revolutionary for the time not only for the sharpness, but also for the WYSIWYG interface. Those of you who grew up with the GUI interface may not realize that what you saw on your screen back then was often very different from what came out in your printer. If you were word processing, for example, bold text might be indicated on the screen by being in a different color than the rest of the text, and italics would be highlighted.
But as we get ready for a new generation of laptops, one of which will probably have more processing power than 100 original Macs combined, let’s sit back and drink in what used to be the most cutting edge computer that (a lot of) money could buy.

Apple cleans up at British Technology Awards
The results of this year’s British Technology Awards are skewed so heavily towards Apple that I have to wonder if Steve Jobs wasn’t maybe a judge. Actually, the results were determined by “… thousands of votes ...” so it may be a fanboy thing. Still, having such rabid fanboys is certainly better for business than simply impressing a handful of men and women who sit around labs and pick apart technology all day.
Winning products after the break.
Hey Microsoft, Times Square is a PC too!
FROM GADGETELL - We were strolling through New York’s Times Square last night, and captured a priceless Windows moment via camera phone. Apparently Times Square is a PC.
[Thanks, Jon]

App Store free apps round-up - October 10, 2008
Another week, another list. By this time, I’m sure you’ve come to some sort of agreement between you and your iPhone about apps. If you’re anything like me, you’ve realized you can’t have every app you’ve downloaded still installed on your iPhone. On top of that, organization of apps is no fun, but it sure is nice. I really wish Apple would implement some way of auto-sorting apps onto their own pages, perhaps by type or category. I’d still like to organize the icons with my Mac instead of with my finger, which takes too long.
Anyway, following are some more apps for your downloading pleasure…
