Appletell preview: Boxee for Mac Alpha
Boxee is a new application for the Mac that is much like Front Row, only betterin theory. It is an open source effort, meaning that plug-ins can be added and it can be modified by others besides the developers. It is currently in a private alpha stage, and I just so happen to be a private alpha member, and I figured I should bring a preview to you.
Macintosh/iPhone software update round-up - October 6, 2008
Macintosh and iPhone software updates and announcements for October 6, 2008:
- Moto Chaser, the mojo racer for iPhone, is temporarily available for $0.99.
- Find and share hiking/running/biking routes with TrailRunner...because moving forward and just occasionally turning left or right can get really confusing.
- And personally, rather than go running, I prefer to spend my time defending my towers from people running at them, as in Fieldrunners.
- They sure made color sound simple in kindergarten, right? Thankfully, Color Expert is here to help you sort through the mess of options that color really is.
- Toolbox 0.8.2 is now user friendly, which is good, because user spiteful apps never really do that well.
- The Dream Apps has announced Dream Capture 2.2. I wonder if it can capture that dream I just had about the shopping carts and Jessica Simpson.
- Dragoman is here to once again make the world safe for dragging!
- I climbed Big Stone Phone when I spent that summer backpacking across Europe. And I have some TalkingPics to prove it.
- I also left some iGraffiti while I was up there, but I’m not proud of that.
- If you put an infinite number of monkeys in a puzzle lab with an infinite amount of time, eventually they’ll burn it down.

Guy Kawasaki on the iPhone: “Let it be open.”
Guy Kawasaki, the original Apple Evangelist, columnist for Macworld and current tech entrepreneur has some simple advice for Apple on the iPhone: open up the development process.
His point is that Apple doesn’t need to exert a huge amount of control over the iPhone app market. The best way to excite developers and users is to have a wide-open market for software, he said.
For those of you two young to remember, Kawasaki was, for many early Mac users, the voice of Apple enthusiasm, sincerely speaking about the greatness of their products and the ways in which they could be used. The recent brouhaha over Apple’s reasoning for disallowing iPhone apps has lead some to call for the return of a public face for the company, who could explain their reasoning, rather than simply issuing authoritarian press releases (or, in true Apple style, simply refusing to comment on the issue altogether).
But the tone of the Macworld piece is much more of a “catching up with an old friend"-ish one: Kawasaki is not (apparently) planning on returning to Apple soon, and is happily working behind the scenes with several tech companies, including one that makes news aggregation even simpler than RSS. As a bonus, Macworld has republished two of his old articles, one lightheartedly comparing the Quadra 800 to a ride in an F-15, and an oddly prescient one about why the Newton should be more like a cell phone.

New MacBooks to have Nvidia Nside

And the “Brick” is…a manufacturing process?!
9to5Mac has been teasing for about a year in internet time about the rumored “Brick” codename, and today they came out and told us what it is...a manufacturing process. Now, if you are like me, you’re pretty crazy disappointed, but read on. This manufacturing process is pretty darn cool.
SEC investigating Steve Jobs heart attack story as stock manipulation
Late last week, a false report that Steve Jobs had been rushed to the hospital following a heart attack sent lemming investors to sell AAPL, driving the stock price down to $97.07, its lowest since before the original iPhone release.
Now the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) is looking into the report as intentional stock manipulation.CNN will likely not be a target of the investigation, as the iReport site that the story was posted on is labeled as unfiltered and potentially inaccurate. CNN did remove both the story and the poster’s account shortly after it was brought to their attention, but not before it was posted to Digg and gained large traction on the internet, causing the panic.
Stocks rose back to above $100 after Apple denied the claim, but fell again, ending the day at a new 52-week low.
All I can say is buy, buy, buy.
