App Store free apps round-up - October 10, 2008

by Jake Gaecke on Oct 10, 2008 at 07:10 AM

App Store top 5 free apps listAnother week, another list. By this time, I’m sure you’ve come to some sort of agreement between you and your iPhone about apps. If you’re anything like me, you’ve realized you can’t have every app you’ve downloaded still installed on your iPhone. On top of that, organization of apps is no fun, but it sure is nice. I really wish Apple would implement some way of auto-sorting apps onto their own pages, perhaps by type or category. I’d still like to organize the icons with my Mac instead of with my finger, which takes too long.

Anyway, following are some more apps for your downloading pleasure…

Macintosh/iPhone software update round-up - October 9, 2008

by Kirk Hiner on Oct 9, 2008 at 06:09 PM

Macintosh and iPhone software updatesMacintosh and iPhone software updates and announcements for October 9, 2008:

  • Tranquility for the iPhone and iPod touch is designed to reduce stress and help you sleep. In other words, it lies to you about the performance of your mutual funds.
  • Dude, you totally breathe too fast. Get an iPhone and slow that down.
  • Wait...there are Mac users who own Windows mobile devices? Weird.
  • Proporta is offering 50% discounts on cases for all the iPods you’ve thrown away.
  • By customized language learning, I don’t think they mean you can learn your own custom language.
  • Jumsoft goes all ambiguous on us, releasing various templates for some software things that look like stuff.
  • And then iPresentee gets more precise for Keynote.
  • So, of course seyDoggy and Varsis Studio just have to do their thing for RapidWeaver 4.
  • Finally, Germans get to flip photos, too.
  • Use TeamViewer to view what your team is doing, unless that team is my Seahawks, in which case it’ll be best to stop viewing anything until at least 2012.
  • Bring iCard functionality to your iPhone. Although, if you ask me, all iCards are spam. Even the ones sent by people you actually know.
  • MacBook Pro owners can get up to 10 extra hours of computer power with the Apple Juicz External Battery/Charger. Just pray you never have to use it.
  • There’s a lot to download from producerloops.com. It’s up to you to figure out what to do with it.

iPhone renegade Podcaster available

by Bill Stiteler on Oct 8, 2008 at 12:47 PM

PodcasterWhen Podcaster was rejected as an iPhone app for duplicating features found in iTunes, the developer, Al Sokirynsky, didn’t just sit there and take it. He began distributing it via Apple’s “ad hoc” program until Apple made him stop doing that, as well.

Well, Sokirynsky, channeling the rebellious power of a Quiet Riot video, is back again. This time he’s distributing Podcaster to jailbroken iPhones via Cydia, an open source project that allows people to put whatever program they want on their iPhones. What a crazy idea—that people could have the ability to install whatever programs they wanted on a computer they paid for, rather than rely on some secretive program to tell them what is or isn’t good enough (or what might potentially take business away from iTunes) for them to use.

Ahem.

Appletell review: Guitarist for iPhone/iPod touch

by Jake Gaecke on Oct 8, 2008 at 07:02 AM

GuitaristGuitarist is an app developed by Moo Cow Music that attempts to be your on-the-go guitar. It’s not going to replace your real guitar, but it might help you seize the moment when creativity strikes.

Since the iPhone has multitouch, using it as a guitar simulator makes sense. There is one striking negative about this app, and I want to get it out right at the start. Since you’re only working with a piece of glass, there is no tactile feedback. It should be noted that this is not a problem with the app, but a limitation of the device itself. If you can get over this one point, then you’ll love this app.

Woz: iPod is SO last year

by Adam Fisher-Cox on Oct 7, 2008 at 10:39 PM

Steve WozniakSpeaking to UK newspaper The Telegraph, Steve Wozniak said that the iPod’s time is limited.

“The iPod has sort of lived a long life at number one. Things like, that if you look back to transistor radios and Walkmans, they kind of die out after a while,” Woz said. He certainly has evidence supporting him. You may remember the recent quarterly results call after which stock dropped because iPods had seen little to no sales growth. I pointed out in an article at the time that it was no reason to panic, as stockholders are apt to do, as by now pretty much everyone and their dog has an iPod. They are no longer new devices, and demand just won’t be as high. The iPod touches, along with iPhone breakout sales are what are keeping the iPhone/iPod sector growing at this point, and it’s because it is new technology.

Woz also talks about a change in how computer comanies do business: “It is time for the whole computer industry to maybe have a bit of a slowdown. For twenty years we have been in this replacement and upgrade market. It is very easy to postpone that when there are financial irregularities.”

Macintosh/iPhone software update round-up - October 6, 2008

by Kirk Hiner on Oct 6, 2008 at 10:00 PM

Macintosh and iPhone software updatesMacintosh and iPhone software updates and announcements for October 6, 2008:

  • Moto Chaser, the mojo racer for iPhone, is temporarily available for $0.99.
  • Find and share hiking/running/biking routes with TrailRunner...because moving forward and just occasionally turning left or right can get really confusing.
  • And personally, rather than go running, I prefer to spend my time defending my towers from people running at them, as in Fieldrunners.
  • They sure made color sound simple in kindergarten, right? Thankfully, Color Expert is here to help you sort through the mess of options that color really is.
  • Toolbox 0.8.2 is now user friendly, which is good, because user spiteful apps never really do that well.
  • The Dream Apps has announced Dream Capture 2.2. I wonder if it can capture that dream I just had about the shopping carts and Jessica Simpson.
  • Dragoman is here to once again make the world safe for dragging!
  • I climbed Big Stone Phone when I spent that summer backpacking across Europe. And I have some TalkingPics to prove it.
  • I also left some iGraffiti while I was up there, but I’m not proud of that.
  • If you put an infinite number of monkeys in a puzzle lab with an infinite amount of time, eventually they’ll burn it down.

App Store free apps round-up - October 3, 2008

by Jake Gaecke on Oct 3, 2008 at 01:01 PM

App Store free apps round up for October 3rd, 2008With Apple’s recent changes to the App Store, I was honestly afraid that I wouldn’t be able to provide a long list of free apps and games for you to try out this weekend. If you’ve noticed, Apple removed the All Apps section the App Store, which provided users with a great way to see all of the newest apps to drop.

But thankfully, I was wrong. I still found a nice long list to clutter up your home screen.

Get this week’s list after the break.

Macintosh/iPhone software update round-up - October 2, 2008

by Kirk Hiner on Oct 2, 2008 at 06:04 PM

Macintosh and iPhone software updatesMacintosh and iPhone software updates and announcements for October 2, 2008:

  • PDO has released the Sleek Crystal Case for the iPhone 3G, and announced many others, but we’re too lazy to tell you about those.
  • 65bit Software is ready for InDesign...are you?
  • H2O Audio liberates swimmers, surfers, kayakers and runners (i.e., hippies) with their waterproof headphones.
  • You know, that Jane Wiedlin was in the movie Clue. Not sure if she’ll be in the computer game, though. Jane Wiedlin = hot.
  • It would be cooler if Clear Armor could make your iPhone entirely invisible.
  • Proporta’s new iPod case looks like an old cassette case. I wonder if it has that weird taco shell smell, too.
  • Record, publish and retrieve location specific phone messages. Intrigued, aren’t you?
  • That crazy Walt Mossberg is still talking about the Mac. Doesn’t he know that Microsoft bought Apple back in the ‘90s?
  • InstantAction. It’s action! It’s instant! It’s beta! And it’s for the Mac.
  • That’s right, stick it to the man and bowl wherever you want to with iBowl.

Obama campaign releases iPhone app

by Bill Stiteler on Oct 2, 2008 at 05:18 PM

Obama iPhone appAs the 2008 presidental contest heats up, the candidates are increasingly taking advantage of technology and social media to connect with their supporters. Today, the Obama campaign released an iPhone/iPod Touch application which will allow supporters to track and coordinate their volunteering efforts, as well as receive updates regarding their candidate.

What’s interesting to me is that the app also adds a competitive element, allowing users to track the calls they’ve been making against a leaderboard.

Jump past the break to see the full list of features.
