The ‘09 iSuites, Blu-ray on Tuesday?

by Adam Fisher-Cox on Oct 12, 2008 at 06:31 PM

Spotlight on Notebooks
9to5Mac is theorizing that this Tuesday event could be about more than just the MacBook family. Though Apple’s invitation was unusually specific ("The spotlight turns to notebooks"), 9to5Mac contends that iLife and iWork 09, as well as Blu-ray, could be present at the event. Though I’m fairly positive Steve Jobs won’t discuss anything at length besides notebooks, here’s what could happen as an update on the side…

Halloween on your iPod: Night of the Living Dead

by Bill Stiteler on Oct 12, 2008 at 02:18 PM

night of the living deadThe leaves are falling, the air is crisp, and we’re heading towards that time of the year: Halloween. Time to put a little horror on your video-capable iPod, courtesy of the fine folks at The Internet Archive. And, our first link of the season is the classic horror film, George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Arguably the most famous zombie film ever made, this low-budget fright fest features a group of mismatched people who barricade themselves in a house on a night when the dead rise to feast on the living. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, quickly they begin to turn on each other.

Video and links after the break.

Drop Box gives you 2 GB of shared storage

by Bill Stiteler on Oct 12, 2008 at 09:48 AM

Drop BoxSharing and syncing files between computers can be a tricky business. Try to access your work computer from home, and you run into firewall problems. Try to access a laptop that’s on a wireless network, and you run into issues of port configuration. And, as files (like photos) get larger and larger, the issue of getting them from one computer to another over a network becomes more and more frequent.

One solution to the problem is Drop Box, a free/paid-pro service that creates a shared folder on your computer. So what’s the big deal, right? Well, you can use this folder to sync and share items between just about any computer running a modern OS: Mac (Tiger and Leopard), Windows (XP and Vista), and Linux (Ubuntu 7.1 and Fedora 9). Any file that you place in your shared folder is uploaded to a secure server, and synced to the shared folder on other computers. If you’re away from one of your computers, you can also access your files via a web interface.

Macintosh/iPhone software update round-up - October 10, 2008

by Kirk Hiner on Oct 10, 2008 at 07:00 PM

Macintosh and iPhone software updatesMacintosh and iPhone software updates and announcements for October 10, 2008:

  • EyeTV has been updated to v3.0.4. So, domo arigato, Mr. Elgato.
  • Steinberg Media’s Cubase Essential 4 Personal Music Production System has a long, haughty name.
  • Battle the mighty Aquafadas! And use their video software if you’ve still got an MPEG-2 or AVCHD camcorder.
  • You’re at a party, a beautiful woman approaches you, and she asks you to compare two SQLite databases with drag and drop simplicity. Will you be ready, or will you go home alone? Again.
  • I wonder if the servers for the BreakThru online radio for iPhone/iPod touch are all on a train racing across the countryside. And that Queen reference is dedicated to all my British readers, who comprise 8% of our audience.
  • iWebTemplate releases new RapidWeaver template, doesn’t change their company name to Sometimes iWebTemplate.
  • You can now practice numerology on the iPhone and iPod touch. I just hope you can still get a solid 3G connection when you’re spending eternity in hell!
  • Arten Science don’t mix. Get it? Arten Science? Art and Science? Ah, forget it. Just check out their screen recording software and leave me alone.

Video of Aluminum MacBook? Probably not.

by Adam Fisher-Cox on Oct 10, 2008 at 05:49 PM

New MacBookWhile this video may indeed provide an idea of what the new MacBook will look like, it is most definitely an attempt to drum up traffic. The video depicts a MacBook Air with a piece of paper covering the keyboard and a chunk taken out of the front; whether this was done in post production or is actually missing is unclear. The biggest giveaway here is the bottom of the MacBook Air lying upside down next to it.

The camerawork is typically unrevealing, staying in close, and focusing and unfocusing quickly. Were the camera to pan back, it would become even clearer that the “MacBook” is simply a MacBook Air with the “Air” disguised in post production.

Video after the break.
